When it comes to bass cabinets, there's inexpensive, light, and good: pick two. Any 4x10 is going to be heavy, unless you get neodymium magnet speakers, which are expensive. The cheapest neo 4x10s I know if are Avatar and Carvin, which are about $500. Actually, the Carvin only saves you 10 lbs over their regular cabinet, which is $379.

Yes, schlepping around a heavy cabinet is a pain in the ass; however, if you CAN do it, you can get some very good-sounding cabinets for not too much. It sounds like getting plenty of volume is an issue for you. There's no substitute for square inches of driver surface, which means either big speakers or lots of speakers, and to handle a high-powered bass amp, that means big magnets. Since this is a tentative step, I'd say deal with the inconvenience in the interest of minimizing your initial investment, and if you stick with it, later you can invest more to get a better (or lighter, if that's what you want) cabinet.

Where are you located? Craigslist is often a good source. And, did you get on TalkBass yet? They have a classified forum; there might be something good for sale in your area.

Well, Avatar has their 2 x 12 NEO cab for $389.00 + $55.00 for shipping. It is only 56 lbs. and handles 500 watts and is a 4 ohm cab. It's light, compact ( 27x24x16 ) ,economical, built well ( 3/4" plywood ), comes in custom colors, 4 OR 8 ohms, can handle 500 watts and reviews have been good. Couple that with the Hartke LH500 I recommended and you would have the loudest, most compact, best quality, and lightest total set-up for the least cost, less than $800.00. It would be ALL NEW with warranties.

Time is running out. I must have a bass rig by Monday jan 31 for a audition. I just may have to call the band and cancel the audition and set it for Feb. 7 Monday. I'll just be honest and say I have not got the bass rig as of yet.

$500-$900
Brand new GK 800. Is this a good deal?
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=729410

or is this a better deal. Don't know the age of this one.
FT: GK 800RB

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will sell outright or trade. $350.

"I've decided to let go my trusty GK 800RB. Functions perfectly and looks great. All knob inserts (I have the ones missing in the photos). Racked all its life.

You guys know this amp. Clean, powerful, 2 channel (300+100watts), 3 rackspace. Pics show excellent condition."

.
The following was a response from the seller of the used GK for $350

"The shipping would have to be on your dime it is not included in the price. It is a older version, but still has all of the same features as a newer one without the rack ears. Here is a pic. of what it looks like."
It shouldn't cost more than $40-50 to ship, but that is a conservative price... the head weighs around 23-24lbs. I am not the original owner, I traded for it from a guy in Dallas. He has had it for at least 3-4yrs with no issues, he nor I have pushed it very hard and it is in great shape. It does have scratches on the top and the sides of the amp but that to be expected for an amp that is at least 10yrs old and hasn't been kept in a rack. All of the knobs and inputs are fine to the best of my knowledge. This by far is the loudest 300watt bass amp I have had... It has headroom and a presence that even soild state amps with twice the power would be hard to beat.

I just bought a Hughes & Kettner combo bass amp and I really like it. If I'm playing a room too big for that, there's bound to be a PA. Before that purchase, I gigged for a year or more with an old Peavey KB300 keyboard amp, with a single 15 and a horn and it was fine. I got compliments on tone from other bassists and I played both electric and upright through it. (And it's a killer amp forthe baritone guitar, too.)

-o-o-o-

This thread is timely for me: recently my band's (in which I've done guitar/vocals) drummer and bass player moved on, leaving it as just me and the other guitar player. Rather than trying to find a bass player and drummer at the same time (that just sounds like such a headache) I drafted a friend who plays guitar (and does killer backing vocals) and moved to bass.

I've played bass in bands a long time ago, and in the meantime I kept playing it when recording demos and occasionally messing about, but I found I definitely needed to hit the woodshed a bit, just because the bass demands more from one's fingers. I am going to have to simplify the bass parts for some of the songs when I'm singing; there will definitely be a learning curve when it comes to coordination. And few songs I just can't hack and I switch off, but hey, spice of life and all that.

Overall though, I'm really liking it. I'd forgotten how just how enjoyable the role is, maybe even moreso for me than guitar.
And hey, I don't have to use a ton of cables and pedals and crap!

Yeah,my bass goes through a single preamp, then to the amp, mixer or both. I find I use three pedals on acoustic and five of six on electric.

I just purchased a GK 800RB.
Looking for a cabinet to go with GK 800RB
I can't find anybody willing to ship 8x10 because of their weight. I have a large car. I would need a van or truck I believe to fit a 8x10 in. So I'll have to settle for an 4x10 4 ohm used if I can find one. Any suggustions on a 4x10 cabinet ?

That amp should work well for you.

If you don't want to spend a ton of money, I know Carvin makes a 4-ohm 4x10 cabinet. Other brands I would look at include Peavey, Hartke, Avatar or maybe a used Ampeg (there are lots of them out there) but I don't know whether any of them are 4 ohms.

Sure. That would be fine.

While it's obviously good to care about your gear, I think you're over-thinking this whole thing quite a bit. As long as you don't get junk, any decent cabinet will work just fine. If you get used gear, you can live with it for a while and if you find out you really just can't stand it, you can probably sell or trade it without taking much if any loss. Don't sit around and stress over which out of half a dozen cabinets you've never played through is better for your unique situation. Just get something and start playing---learn how to dial in your amp and get comfortable playing bass. Worry about the subtleties of tone later, when you know more about the instrument.

Between this thread and your thread on TalkBass, you've gotten recommendations for lots of reputable cabinets. Pick whichever one you can get the best deal on or is most easily available where you are. (Also, I agree with the people on TalkBass who were telling you not to sweat the 4 ohms/8 ohms thing too much. If you find a good cabinet at a good price but it's 8 ohms, I recommend not passing it up.)

Sweetwater music reccomends this cabinet.

Brian:
"I would get an Ampeg SVT410HLF before anything else. It is articulate but with a lot of bass, and it's easy to move around because it has big casters in the back plus a bar so you can tilt it and roll it around. "

So I will be buying this cabinet. Help me choose used or new.http://used.guitarcenter.com/usedgear/index.cfm probably add $100 for shipping. Very good condition. A few rips in the tolex. 500 watts 4 ohms. probably 2-3 years old. No warranty

That cab weighs 110 pounds. Wade said in post #103 that he can't get it in his trunk or back seat. Just get one of these and be done with it. http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gallien-Krueger-Neo-212II-2x12-600W-Bass-Cabinet?sku=580260 :)

Yeah, it's too deep, basically like a fridge. Won't fit through the back door on my Olds, and I doubt it will fit into any car that's not an SUV or van.

Different view from Sweetwater Music. The following response from Sweetwater.

Brian:

"1) I have hauled my 410HLF in my Honda Accord. It's tight but it fits in back. I have to tip the front seat forward, toss it in, and tip the seat back. And it's actually easier with one guy, you just grab the rail and pick it up with the top against your belly and go!

Again, it's tight. If you want something smaller, check out the TC RS410. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RS410/ -- it is a lot smaller since it doesn't have the huge bass port on the bottom. It won't be as boomy.

2) 1/4" speaker cable will be necessary. Forget the bi-amping -- I have never gotten any use out of that on any of the GK Amps I have owned. Here's the cable I would recommend -- http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/P500S3/

What do you think?

I like the fact that it weighs only 110 lbs not super heavy. The 8x10 just too big for me. The 4x10 sounds perfect.
Dimensions (W x H x D inches): 24 x 30 x 19. Would this fit in the back seat of a large 4 door Toyota Acura without ripping the interior? It's probably too big for the trunk.I have a farly large trunk. Finding a cab that will fit in my car is my biggest concern. My second concern was how easy to move around. I'm a big guy about 6"1 215 lbs . Do you need 2 people to get this cabinet in and out of the car or can one strong man handle the job? +++++for being 4 ohm. I will be using a Gallien Krueger 800 rb head. 300-watts (4 ohms) low-frequency amp, 100-watt high amp. So I will plug in the low frequency amp and be able to use the 300 watts(4ohms). I. +++++ Sounds like it has the loudness and booming low end I desire. Sounds like it it make a great cabinet for rock n roll.
Lets talk accesories . What kind of cables I need? 1/4 speaker bass speaker cable to hook speaker from cabinet to amp head. How do you utilize the the bi amping on the Galien Krueger? Is this something worth checking into? Or do most people not utilize the bi amping on the GK 800rb? ============================
