Members IsildursBane
On my way home last night, I came upon the largest truck convoy I've ever seen: I'm guessing 10 (maybe more, I couldn't even see to the front of the line) semis with low-boy trailers, 12+ escort vehicles (many with very long radio antennas), and 12+ state troopers. The convoy was taking up the 2 left-hand lanes until they had to exit onto another highway, at which point, in order for them to change lanes, the cops blocked all 3 lanes from behind as well as any on-ramps they were driving by. There did not appear to be any military presence. Each of the trucks had a white rectangular box on the trailer - not overly large, maybe a foot or 2 over width and so tall that it needed a lowboy trailer, but still able to fit under an overpass. Each box was approx 20-25' long. Given the standard number of axels on the trailers, I would assume they were not especially heavy. One of the boxes had a regular door like a person would walk through; others may have as well, but it was tough to tell. They were not corrugated metal shipping containers. If you had told me that they were sections of a modular house, I would have believed you. I couldn't see any markings on the boxes, nor any openings aside from the aforementioned door. They may have been covered with some sort of plastic wrap - the outside was fairly smooth and looked more like plastic than metal. I did not see any placards indicating hazardous materials. I know some of you guys are familiar with the trucking industry, so I thought I'd see if you had any ideas as to what it could have been that they were carrying that would warrant such an escort. If it helps, they were travelling up 95 north from Foxboro/Providence to 93 north towards Boston. -Dan.

Members stix 518
Not sure if this is BS, but a friend of mine told me that sometimes they transport the expended nuclear fuel from the power plants overland on the interstate highway system (Rte. 395 around here) and he described a similar visual to what you witnessed. Was it midnight/early morning? He indicated that they only move the shipments at the dead of night as traffic is light, it provides the least exposure, and highest level of security. It all made sense to me. Stix

Members jwlussow
My first thought was nuclear. We have a couple nuke plants in Northern Illinois and they will do that move under very tight security. I also remember a similar situation about 15 years ago when some very large shipments of naplam were being shipped through the city and security was ridiculous. That was rail car to truck and they had police and military all over.

Members Coaster
He's said too much already yep. think "superbowl, hands down pants" kinda stuff. although in this case the trucks were probably much safer toxic waste.

I would have guessed that it was some sort of toxic waste, too, except for the route they were taking, which takes them towards the city rather than around it. But I suppose they could have also been going to the nuclear plant in Plymouth. -Dan.
Members jwlussow
It is possible that they were not waste but new rods for the plant. That would require more security then the waste.
