Bad Habits

Does anyone have any bad habits they're aware of when they play? Do they encumber your playing and what do you do to fix them?

 

I recently just developed an awful picking technique from way too much fast downpicking tied in with string jumping for some riffs. It's kinda stupid, but my pick hand starts to go with a stabbing motion rather than a picking one when jumping to different strings to quickly. Ugh.

It does sound as though you need to relax more when you play.....there's stuff to be found on the net about how to make sure you're relaxed when you play.

Most bad habits stem from UNawareness.

 

Becoming aware of them is the first step towards correcting them.

This should be broadened to include ab and mal awareness. Very detrimental and difficult to rectify.

I once read a good article about tension in the shoulders and back while learning how to play guitar, and both the physical pain it causes and how it increases the difficulty of the learning process.

My thumb keeps riding to high on the back of the neck. The solution: Concentrate on it. It's getting better.
