Members ginnboonmiller
I dunno. I'm pretty nonplussed. I mean, it's way cool to go to an IMAX theater and feel like a dwarf and watch all the pretty colors and all. But it's not really something necessary for good cinema. I mean, what if it had caught on for dramatic film? Do you really want to pay ten bucks to see what's in Dustin Hoffman's nostrils for two hours? I {censored}ing saw Austin Powers - Goldmember in Imax. It was totally lame. But documentaries, {censored} like that, that could be pretty awesome. Basically, the kind of stuff they used in the beginning to make it look awesome. Then they just started showing dumb crap. I mean, the Rolling Stones? WTF? Members Mr. Twang
I saw the documentary Everest in Imax and it was breathtaking. Also, they're soon going to be showing all six Star Wars movies in Imax in 3D, which sounds pretty sweet, in my opinion. But yeah, for the most part they show a lot of stupid {censored}. But how is that any different from any other movie theater?
Members mofx4me
I like IMAX. It's too bad all of the movies aren't 3D. I saw Batman Begins at an IMAX. But if that was in 3D I probably would have died. But it's cool that the screen takes up pretty much the whole wall.
Members Zooey
The documentary stuff rocks. When I was a kid, I saw a show about the Grand Canyon that rocked (the theater was basically a wall of bleachers set up on front of a drive-in movie sized screen). I also saw "Blue Planet" in the dome shaped planetarium in San Diego--also cool. They used to play a John Holmes porno in 3D at a local art house movie theater. THat's some scary {censored}! Yeah, I'm a huge fan of the various documentaries that they show at IMAX theaters in museums, but that one was the best. Totally blew me away. Members bullhead
personally, i think IMAX is a TERRIBLE way to see a feature film. here's why: 1) the screen proportions are totally {censored}ed. a normal cinema displays 16:9 while IMAX is in roughly 4:3. 2) IMAX presentations have to be a certain length, so a certain amount has to be CUT out of movies. so if you want to see a whole movie, dont' go see it in IMAX. 3) any grain, dust, or anything else on the print is about fourteen feet tall. 4) IMAX theatres, due to the degree in incline of the seating in the theater, cannot possibly have a full surround setup, limiting the sound to basically stereo. Members Karma1
I just went to the IMAX theatre in San Francisco and saw a feature about man on the moon, narrated by Tom Hanks. It was the first IMAX 3-D I've seen and it was incredible. I hadn't seen anything in 3-D since some cheesy sci-fi many years ago, so I had no idea what an amazing experience this would be. Very impressive! The funniest thing was in the begining seeing people from a large group of foreign tourists around the theatre reaching out to try to touch something that looked like it was suspended in space right in front of you. I did, actually. Meh. Actually to me, Imax just seems bigger, and not at all better. I don't see the big deal at all. Not worth the already exhuberant prices of a feature film. Members mugglesport
IMAX Blows.OMNIMAX, on the other hand (now called IMAX Dome) is completely badass.the difference is that it is shot with a fisheye lense and then projected through a matching fish eye on a dome-shaped screen which shows 180 degrees horizontally, 100 degrees above the horizon and 22 degrees below the horizon for a viewer at the center of the dome. The screen is micro-perforated and speakers are mounted behind it. So the sound actually comes through the screen.
Members PB Wilson
I did enjoy one of the Star Wars on IMAX mainly because of the detailed backdrops and bowel-churning sounds that Lucas used. Hearing the sonic depth charges with a few thousand watts behind it was pretty cool. Too bad the movies weren't as good as the technology put into them. I think seeing the Lord of the Rings trilogy would be pretty cool on IMAX. That, and the big visual ones like Everest. Winged Migration would be cool as well.
