Alternate Tunings

I like to use DADF#BD, F#F#C#G#BB, and open A for more "harmonious" sounds. And EGDGED, GGDAGA, FGCFAF#, and DFCDFF for noisy stuff. One of my favorites is CGDGBB.

I'll have to check out some of your tunings... they look very interesting.

One tuning I use is very simple - standard tuning but drop the B string down to A.... so E A D G A E.

Just that simple change really opens things up for me. I can use my "normal" chord shapes but it takes me to completely different musical places.

Good thread! And cheap too! Alternate tunings are much less expensive of an "effect" than buying pedals! :thu:

I play in Open G more than standard I think...too much Black Crowes influence. :thu:

Also lots of Open E (This is probably the Allmans/Derek Trucks influence)

Lately I've been messing around in Open G minor a bit...At least that's what I'm calling it-don't know if its the correct name for Open G with the B flattened. Sounds cool sometimes for songs you'd normally play in G. Little darker, sadder. The saddest of all keys as Nigel would say.

I go through phases where I'll play in DADGAD quite a bit, especially on the acoustic.

I did buy an excellent book about alternate tunings a couple years back, but my Grandmother died at around that time, and I never gave the book a proper going over. I may just dig it out one of these days.

I really like DGCGCD...anyone here know what song employs this tuning? There is only one that I know of that uses it.

I enjoy open D, too (DADF#AD).

Yup that's the Rain Song tuning...very cool on an acoustic 12 string. :thu:
