I'm prepared to be the only one at HCFX contributing to this thread, but I thought I'd test the water and see if anyone else out there shares the  for one of America's best post-punk/new-wave/pop bands. The Cars over-saturated FM rock radio in the late 70's/early 80's, but I still think their sound is a timeless hybrid of Buddy Holly, Beach Boys, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Bowie, Eno, Roxy Music, and Suicide.

Candy-O is the high-watermark for me. Ben Orr R.I.P.

I really liked The Cars as well - a very innovative and distinctive sound. However, back in the 70's in Denver, I saw them open the show for Jeff Beck. Unfortunately the crowd wanted nothing to do with them and practically booed them off the stage. Too bad - Elliot Easton was a pretty decent guitarist in his own right.

I got the Cars Gold greatest hits double cd a couple of weeks ago and listened to them really good for the first time since the first go round....very impressed. I liked them when they were the MTV golden group but I didn't appreciate just how deep layered and textural the music was; there is so much to listen too. :thu:

Elliot Easton is a
criminally
under-rated player. Definitely on my "ten favorite guitarists" list.

Did Easton not get some of the tastiest guitar tones ever? I'm sure that Roy Thomas Baker had a lot do with it as well, but still. And his solos always have a terrific balance of melody and edginess. Never bloated.

The Touch and Go video totally pre-dates the whole Robert Palmer "Addicted to Love" schtick. I love it!

Great to know there is still enthusiasm. Thanks guys :D

A buddy of mine knows Elliot, and says that yes, he is quite down to earth and a genuinely nice guy.

Yes, RTB had a lot to do with the sound of their records. Certainly the HUGE BGV's were a RTB calling card; but I think Elliot deserves a lot of the credit for the guitar parts. Sure, Ric's muted 8th note rhythms were a big part of the sound of the band, along with his songs, but all the tasty embellishments and solos that were so melodic, and so toneful (with just the right balance of speed and flash vs melodic content) are so important to their sound that if you do a cover of a Cars song and DON'T play the solos note for note, the audience is likely to sing them for you; along with the killer tones - that was all due to Elliot IMO.

He's also a very knowledgeable collector. Gotta love a fellow gear slut. ;) And probably most importantly, the man knew how to play for the SONG and not just wank and show off his (significant) chops. Highly commendable IMHO.

Like I said, he's waaaaay under-rated IMO.

BTW, did anyone catch The New Cars on tour? I wanted to, but was stuck in the studio...
:mad::(

They came through town, but I missed them  I really like Todd Rundgren as well. Utopia's Trivia is a nice collection, and The Psychedelic Furs' "Forever Now" is one of my favoirte post-punk productions. I would love to see what the setlist was.

It's another reason to get out and hear you guys again

Heck yeah son. I'll let you know.

Incidentally, I was walking through Sears yesterday (don't ask) and 'Just What I Needed' came on in the store. At first I thought here's the Circuit City song, but after I was able to actually hear the full song without annoying promo's for DVD players and camcorders, I remembered just how amazing it is.

I love how in the third verse of that song when he repeats the word 'TIME' ("...Wasting all my time time") it signals the drum rhythm change! :thu: Pretty neat.

And the solo is perfect, IMO.
