not really a most original but really good none the less.

where do you feel are they lifting from? I've heard quite a bit of music and Animal Collective have always struck me as being a band that pretty much have their own particular musical vocab.

Just curious. I love AC.

folk music.

children's melodies.

ambient electronic.

and maybe a hint of some techno genre for the danciness.... or if you prefer not mentioning techno then how about something more primitive for that driving 4 on the floor beat. american indian music perhaps?

not many are doing it but they aren't reinventing the wheel.

there's actually some local groups near where i live that are similar in spirit and some in sound.... they coulda heard the collective and been inspired or not... i dunno. i haven't been around these bands for a year or 2. they're all about 10 years younger than i.

look into foot village, or if they're still around (one of the keyboardists is ill i think) child pornography (great band name), or halloween swim team. one of my favorites was quem quaritis. they would play in a tent. yes a tent on a stage... soooooooo awesome.

all lil localish bands in my neck of the woods.

when i played animal collective for my my girl she said that she hears a lil pavement in there (cause she was into pavement so i guess thats why she'd hear it) on another tune during a nice drony jammy part i hear some sonic youthiness.

back on topic:

when i first heard animal collective (the tune peacebone) about 2 months ago on a college radio station i was a lil blown back a bit by they're sound....

(i coulda been a lil blunted... actually i think i was as i do believe i was on my way to practice with the singer in my band) but it was in a more blown back in a "finally this type of stuff is on the radio."

within a week i got "strawberry jam" and played it for a month straight. good catchy stuff.

the sales person at the counter was way into them.

i then youtubed them a got a lil more into their stuff. there is a good interview up of them.

now

being a noob to them what would be a good next cd purchase of theirs?

i know that the others are a lil different than the newest one but what should be next for me?

'Feels' and 'Here Comes the Indian' are both really great, as is the live CD they released a year or so ago.... Hoodaligan I think it's called. I've been following them since 'Spirit They've Gone' and they just keep mining new territory.

Personally I think AC will be viewed in years to come as one of the very few indie bands from the early 2000's to actually develop a new (or as close as you'd like to think) sound over time.

'Person Pitch' by Panda Bear is also quite awesome.

if you really like strawberry jam, you should probably go backwards through their catalog... listen to "Feels" next, then "Sung Tongs" and "Prospect Hummer", then the older stuff. the first album, "Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" is really really really good. Sung Tongs is the best one, in my opinion.

You know, I saw Animal Collective last September, (they were amazing, one of the best bands I've seen live) and the one thing that kept bugging the hell out of me, was the question, "what do they use!?". For thier last tour, the only thing that I could decipher was that Panda Bear was using a little sampler, (from watching several different youtube vids), but that still didn't explain what thier vocals were hooked up to, and the stuff that Geologist was using seemed comepletely alien to me.

Does anyone have an idea of what gear they use?

Oh and I think they had mixers. Lots of mixers.

yeh i dig animal collective...

i saw them in belgium in july and they were great....

as for gear,, these days its mainly samplers...

im pretty sure panda uses 2 sp-303's and geologist uses an sp-404 and minidisc players....

there was no guitars... and minimal drums,, a floor tom and couple of cymbals... there was an old roland synth behind them,, not sure what they were doing with that... cant recall any of them playing it actually...

its possible they were running something thru it, using it as filter.. whatever...

'strawberry jam' is ok... i gave it a good listen for a month or so,, but just havent really gone back to it....

and i also think they are quite unique...

everyone has influences,, its what you do with it and how you let things influence you.... i think they are doing a pretty good job...
