Members zoink
If you want to hear a funky vocoder, check out Roger Troutman and Zapp: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=zapp+roger&search=Search Nothing against Herbie, but Roger wrote the book on funky vocoder!!! Members RoboChrist
Zapp...yes I remember them fondly, a lotta guys in high school were doing the whole B-boy thing to their music, but I wasn't a huge fan...that Herbie track blows them away though (sorry Zapp fans)! Members lerber3
It's a talk box, not a vocoder... but does anybody know if you can get talkbox sounds from a vocoder? I gots me a V-Synth GT on order and this is a very cool sound.
Members orangefunk
Yep the Roland has talbox emulations.
Members orangefunk
My favourite all time talkbox solo is from John Miles "Slowdown" from 1976. An absolute disco classic with balls... I also really like Herbie and ZAPP although the ZAPP stuff was more of an evolution than revolution as it came later... so he didn't really write the book on talkbox IMHO... there are cool Stevie videos on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By-cF0W2JLw&NR=

Actually they both hit around 1978 if I recall correctly, so I would rate them both concurrently as vocoder pioneers, with Roger taking it (use of the vocoder) far and away much further. Members orangefunk
Herbie was using it a bit earlier than '78.. the Doin' it track (from Secrets) was released in 1976 (recorded '75?).. I agree that ZAPP made it their sound though..

Members orangefunk
yes the Hancock stuff is a Senheiser vocoder... its listed on the Sunlight LP.. Zapp is all talkbox, thats why he always has the tube in his mouth...
Members ChromaLord
I fail to understand why nobody makes a vocoder on par with the old Moog, Bode, Senneheiser or even the Roland rackmount. I have one in the Virus TI- sucks, the Waldorf Q- sucks, the Vsynth XT- mediocre and the Korg Radias and Oasys-sucks! Vocoding is old technology. Why has it got worse? Members mate_stubb
Well, gee. Would you pay $10k for a vocoder up to those specs? Didn't think so.

A couple of years or so a French company (now defunct) has, it was called the Analog-Lab X-32 Vocoder (32-band vocoder)!!
