Late 80s / Early 90s Metal in a Box

Anyone know of any good pedals that can do the 80s metal sound? I'm talking about White Lion, Racer X, Autograph, Extreme, Van Halen .... those kind of bands. Most of those bands used an ADA MP-1 so is there any pedal that can capture that kind of distortion?

Please don't say the Boss Metal Zone as I've tried this pedal and don't like it at all. :cop:

Here's some clips with a Marshall Bluesbreaker II in front of the amp.All the lead overdriven tones on these clips come from the BBII pedal. The last clip which is the 80's tribute clip, used the BBII for all the rhythm, lead and harmony parts.

Good God man, what did you do to get it sounding like that? If I turn the gain up on mine it gets fuzzy.

What about the Marshall Guv'nor? Or the Boss Metal Core??

The Boss HM-2.

Don't laugh, but also the Boss GT-10. It just came out this month but that thing nails 80s Metal & 90s Grunge.

I'm on the lookout for a Boss HM-2.... There are some on eBay but I'm always dubious as to whether they work or not. Yes, the descriptions say they work but these pedals may crackle when the knobs are moved, I trust the people here more.

Haven't looked at the GT-10, but I did once try the GT-8 and my brain couldn't cope with how complex it seemed to be.

Try out the Electro Harmonix Metal Muff

I dont have any real use for the top boost feature, but the core sound is awesome. Used to love my Metal Zone, cant use it since trying the Metal Muff.

Sounds like Pantera in a box. Punchy bass and great biting treble. Powerful mid control, really changes the sound.

I dont really know much old metal, but I dont like the sounds of all these Nu-Metal bands. I like Pantera, Metallica pre Black, some Machine Head. And this box is great for that sort of thing.

Give it a try, aint expensive either.

All the best

I had a Pocket Metal Muff and didn't like it much to be honest. Melx now owns it......

I wouldn't disregard the MT-2 if you're handy with a soldering iron. if you remove a couple capacitors to flatten the EQ, remove the icky sounding silicone diodes to replace them with LEDs and swap out 2 of those lame stock Mitsubishi op amps for some 4558Ps. I hated the stock sound of the MT-2. After it's been modded to Monte Allums specs with those TS808 chips installed. It's impressive.

I wonder if something like this would work good for the HM-2

ShredMaster doesn't have enough gain on its own to be enough for metal, but can get pretty metal tones.

I guess just a HM-2 or something

the shredmaster is great for punk, in my friends old band both guitarists had them on all the time....they sounded great live.
