wth

i have a bbe boosta grande and a bbe green screamer (ts9 copy.. pretty faithful imho). the green screamer (like the ts9) takes out significant bass, but the boost doens't. on top of that the boost adds gain and i get that light od i like to be in. it actually sounds better than the green screamer. what gives/? has anyone experienced this?

Depends what sort of amp you are running it into, but I would say the majority of the time if you want a more distorted/louder version of your amp's sound then yes. If you want coloration and something different, an OD/Distortion box is for you.

I will choke you.

When I lived in San Francisco two years ago, I met a porn star. His name was Dorian Gray, like the Oscar Wilde novel. His speciality was, I {censored} you not, "underwater S&M." Don't ask me how this happens, I truly do not know. He also told us a story about how a doctor from Hawaii pays Dorian $1500 to get slapped around a bit (by the doctor) every six months. "Yeah, you know, I just lay down on the table and he slaps me and punches me a little. He gets kinda tired after a while, though. Easy $1500!"

Anyways, so we were at a party with this other guy, who's name escapes me now, but he was gay. Dorian is bisexual, and they went to that guys' house. On the busride home, Dorian asked the dude to choke him... on the bus. The next morning, we called up the guy and said "Hey, how was Dorian?"

"I don't think I could be in a relationship with anyone who tried to shove a dildo down my throat."

Clean boosts help to push your amp to natural overdrive.

Overdrive pedals try to--but don't--replicate natural overdrive. Since they don't, overdrive pedals have become their own sound.

OD pedals like you're using (TS based overdrives and others) tend to cut out bass. The Boss OD-3 apparently doesn't. The Visual Sound Route 66 has a bass boost switch to try to fix this.

I like a good old LPB-1 (which isn't entirely clean) to get me that just broken up overdrive. They've got a bit of their own hair, but also a big boost, which makes for a very natural sounding overdrive.

what about a pedal that pushes the amp to 'natural' od that doesn't add a boost?

doesn't exist, to push the amp into natural OD you need more volume going in to the amp.

personally I have a clean boost (wobo buffer/boost) and an OD (fulltone OCD)

I use the clean boost like a switch that turns my amps first gain knob up a little. That's what it does. Like if you had a volume knob on your guitar that went past 10.

I use the OCD for a volume boost (more amp gain) and for the drive (drive knob set between 0 and 3) and it doesn't really alter my tone that much.

I'm rambling aren't I.

so basically a clean boost is better than most od pedals if you're using a dirty amp channel already. How ever if you've only got a clean channel an OD is the way to go.

Just make sure you've got a good OD pedal that doesn't suck the life out of your guitar.

Ive liked the MI audio pedals, fulltone, carl martin, TREX/TC electronic, Xotic... good OD pedals that keesp your guitar's character intact. A tubescreamer does not.

the biggest reason why i'm using a green screamer is bc i simply don't have access to the brands you mentioned. where can i try them out, or how did you do it? ordering constantly online? gc carries the fulltone ocd but it was out of stock when i came in for a demo

Wow, only in California. That's an amazing specialty actually, I'd love to be able to write that on my tax return.

BONGOOOO!

This is pbone, he's being a thick twat as usual

Well, color me gullable... or maybe I've spent too much time on the internet and met too many neurotic people. Besides the part about underwater S+M, and I only doubt it because I've never heard of it, none of that would surprise me.

In my opinion, yes. I don't like most overdrives. Clean boosts push my tube amps just to the right place. No need for serious coloration when you have a really good tube amp. There is a place for overdrives and distortions, if that's your thing. Fuzz, well, fuzz is a must have on any board because it's just it's own thing. For overdrives, though, I always prefer clean boosts. I'm currently using the RC BOoster, and it's fantastic.
