yeah, I want something bright and ringing, but I'm not sure if it's going to be
too
bright and ringing...probably won't know until I try it
:idk:

You know, you might like the Diamond Compressor too, the EQ on that is great for bright compression as well as warmer stuff with the treble rolled off. I think it is more subtle than the janglebox though, but has enough for my needs.

Great minds think alike. This pedal has been on my radar for months.

Just so you know, a bigger and more complicated version of this is coming out by Janglebox.

However, I think I am planning on just sticking with the less complicated one.

oooh, really? I hadn't seen any news about this. Do you know when the new version is due out?

Does anyone have one of these? Can you give me a reason not to buy one?

I know that trying a pedal with my own set up is vital to determining if it's "the one". All the sound files and glowing reviews ultimately mean squat.

To that effect, Janglebox only gives you 48 hours trial AND charge an extra $20 to return it. They only offer a 90 day warranty - that's just bizarre for a boutique builder. That has kept me from giving it a try.

The dude from the Byrds swears by it. I've read nothing but good reviews...but have never tried one. I've owned the Diamond, and it's a great pedal.

...whereas John Hall at Rickenbacker just swears at it.

Onyx, personally I'd go for the Diamond comp. Awesome compressor and the EQ is the big win about it. Basic compression is good but the EQ lets you dial in the top end when you need it. With 12-string, it's fabulous.

I would too since he developed an onboard compressor for the Ric.

And yes again to the Diamond

Interesting thread here:

Hi Michael:

I don't know how much help this is going to be (I might actually confuse

matters for you, lol!), but here's the background.

The sound I originally wanted to emulate was the one in Rickenbacker's

370-12 RM (Roger McGuinn Limited Edition model, issued in 1988-89). I

thought that was a terrific sounding compressor -- minus the noise. Over the

years I tried my various Ric 12s through SIX conventional boxes (MXR

Dynacomp, Carl Martin, Art Levelar, Alesis Nanocompressor, Boss CS-3, and a

Maxon. None of them got the sound I wanted.

For three years, four groups worked on this box for me, but the guys at

Talos Amplifiers were the ones who really pulled everything together.

The first group reviewed the Ric circuit and said it sounded good, but the

circuit had too much superfluous stuff, and that noise issues could be

addressed better by reworking the schematic. Each subsequent group tweaked

and added/removed/changed various components. I took all this crap to the

Talos guys who reworked the circuit completely. They created the prototype,

and now assemble the boxes.

So, the origins of JangleBox were in the Ric circuit, but it has been pretty

radically reworked. Ironically, what evolved was a terrific, multi-purpose

compressor.

I've heard that the original Ric circuit itself was somewhat based on the

MXR, but replaced whatever IC chip with the 3080E. John Hall, Ric CEO, says

a proprietary chip was used. A guy in CA told me this was bull{censored} -- it was

the 3080E. There's no way of telling really, as the chip in the 370-12RM had

the manufacturers mark removed.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough technical expertise to add much more. My

background is in design and marketing. I'm an amateur guitar player with a

passion for the Byrds/Beatles/Springfield, etc. chime, and developing this

box was just a long-time passion of mine. I have no electronics knowledge

other than what I've picked up along the way.

Thanks for the advice guys. I appreciate it, but I'm not quite sure what to do. From what I've heard of the Diamond, it sounds like a nice all-around compressor. The thing is, I'm not so into "normal" compression sounds. What intrigues me about the Janglebox is that it seems to do a specific tone very very well, and I'm more interested in that tone than compression in general. But then, I play a Jazzmaster and not a Tele or Ric, so it might not work well for me anyway.

Agreed. The Diamond is a lot different to something like the Keeley comps. Again, it's the EQ that does it. I can get a more than passable Bryds-style jangle using a 335 with PAF's. Haven't actually used the comp with my new Tele yet so I'll have ot hook that up once I'm well enough to play again.

I own one. I got it for my Dano 12 string. Sounds amazing! Use it occasionally for the Nashville compressed Tele kind of thing. Works well for that. Most of the hype is for what it does for a 12 string. The hype is true. Instant Byrds!

I never use the dark setting as it's REAL dark. The bright is REAL bright but it really gives my Dano that 60's chime. I've never owned a Jazzmaster so I can't say how it would work with the Janglebox. Get a cheap 12 string and a Janglebox and be amazed! It is intoxicating.

well, one just popped up on ebay, so I bought it. I should find out very soon how it jibes with my Jazzmaster. Thanks for all the Diamond recommendations, though. Sounds like a cool pedal, for sure. I might try one of those out down the line, but I really just wanted to see if I could add an extra dimension to my set-up with the Janglebox.
