Members companyman
so I read that it is recommended to run my Vox Tonelab ST (set to line) from its output to the return of the effects loop on my Sunn Alpha. This takes the preamp and EQ on the Sunn out of the signal, taking it directly to the output section then the speaker. The sound of the amp models and effects are so much better sounding, but now the master volume on the amp does nothing. The sound still comes out of the amp, even when turned all the way down, volume is unaffected when it is cranked. Is this normal? The output from the Tonelab's master volume is MUCH louder setup like this, but not as loud as the amp by itself when cranked, at least I don't think, can't really crank it at home....just wondering if this is normal, or if there is something wrong with the pedal? Members gambit
i used to do that with my Engl head, but the Master Volume definitely still worked.. odd.
Members companyman
the Sunn is a 1978, not sure what kind of loop it is, series, parallel....or if that is pertinent. I have run the Tonelab normally in the loop, i.e. send/return, it worked normally, but it was noisy, so I tried it this way. Weird....
Members companyman
bump....spent a couple hours playing, the sound is really good, but this loop thing is really strange....no one has had this issue with a multi-effects? Members Cirrus
I don't know the amp at all, but I wonder if the loop is AFTER the master volume? If it was then it'd do what you've described. Does the master volume affect the level coming from the send?
Members ChuckNorris1982
Yeah it depends on the design of the amp, it's not uncommon. Some loops are pre-master volume, others are post-master volume. I prefer a loop which is pre-master volume, otherwise as you turn the master up you can start clipping the pedals in the loop. Members fly135
Perfectly normal.
Members companyman
it kinda makes sense that the loop is after master volume, the way that it is behaving. So does this mean that the wattage of the amp is meaningless? Does the Tonelab dictate the max wattage? I hope that it can get to gig volumes, just can't test it at my apartment...... edit- turning the master doesn't affect the pedal level.
Members HeartfeltDawn
It should all be good. I run my pedals direct into the power amps on my two Bandits, generally using the Volume on the Diamond compressor to set the overall volume level. No headroom issues and it sounds really good. I don't think you'll have any problems with volume at gig level.
