I outlined the same argument in a brief editorial piece I wrote for my blog. http://computermusicguide.com/archives/1931 essentially, software is an investment of time and money in coaxing out a polished sound through buying extra presets, mastering tools etc. Hardware is much more expensive and because it's tied to a proprietary interface, it seemingly offers a much better experience.
