Which preamp 12Ax7 tube?

need advice, i own a vox cambridge 15 watt practice amp and the original tube (i think a 12Ax7 sovtek EH) is capping out. which brand should i try? i like classic, retro, british rock sounds.

I'd stick with the EH. Of course,since preamp tubes are pretty cheap,you could get 3-4 different ones and check them out.

can you tell me the difference between the sovtek 12 AX 7 EH and the sovtek 12 AX 7 WA or the sovtek 12 AX 7 WB or the sovtek 12 AT 7 ... can i use 'em all? will they all fit into my cambridge? i am no pro and don't know what the endings mean. are they just different models with different sound characters but always fitting into my tube socket? thanks.

Try a few different types. Descriptions are often misleading as we all hear things differently, want to hear different things, and own different gear.

 

There are usually only one or two critical sockets per amp. Figure out which ones these are and try all your selections in them. Keep the tubes you like best in these sockets (often different tubes) and put your least favorites in the other sockets.

 

Contenders are EH, Sovtek LPS, Ruby STR 7025 and Chinese 9th Generation 12AX7s.
