However, Dylan I cannot stand (while lyrically he's reputed to have written some reasonably poingnant stuff, his music and style drain from me the will to find out). All the cookie monster cr*p ... it's simply NOT singing. The guy from Coldplay (one of the most overrated bands/singers/ ... pianists if you can really call him that OF ALL TIME IMO) - he yodells, enough said. All modern female vocalists using that "processed"sound, wait, thta IS all modern female vocalists. In defence of Mr LaBrie, while I can accept those that have qualms over his style of singing, I don't believe anyone should be in doubt of his technical prowess. Having recently heard him live, twice, I can fully confirm that his vocal chords have at last healed since he damaged them way back in '94 and his voice sounds BETTER THAN EVER. he still has the incredible range of I&W (and he now hits the top notes every time, no screaching them out as has been heard on most of DTs live CDs). What ought to be mentioned though is his shear professionality in that he still takes singing lessons (of varying styles, there are definately operatic influences in his training) despite being incredibly sucessful in his chosen profession. I firmly believe that the quality of nearly ALL modern vocalists could be significantly improved with some poitners from a professional teacher. Note hear that I myself have been classically trained (though not any more, damn my voice breaking and turning to absolute crap) and that {censored} stays with you in terms of breath control etc. I agree for the most part about JL. However it never ceases to amaze me that a band full of virtuoso's like Dream Theater couldn't come up with a better vocalist. I am a very late comer to the the DT camp, (Scene from a Memory and Awake are the only CD's I have as of yet) But the guy has some hyper irratating vocal traits. Not the high notes, the low ones where he insists on using the widest vibrato, the gasps for emotional effect (esp on SFAM) and some "effected" pronunciations. Just drive me nuts. I'd love to hear Geoff Tate from Queensryche do DT sometime. As for annoying vocalists: The guy from Coldplay All cookie monster and cookie cutter "singers" Anything that Autotune has touched in an obvious way. I like true singers like Coverdale for example although I don't like much of his material. Hagar is amazing to be able to still pull it off after 55 years. Vocal lessons do indeed pay off. I took 3 years of them in the 80's and can still nail all those annoying notes from Plant, Priest and Maiden at 50. I think most guitarists don't get that singing "way up there" is like nailing a shred solo. I've been in both camps and the feeling is amazing. Doing an old Humble Pie song like "I don't need no Doctor" is a true high.

Hagar has always stretched up there vocally since the early days. What is amazing to me is his longitivity. What I don't like about Hagar is his lyrics esp with Van Hagar. One notable exception is "When its Love" flat out one of the best he ever wrote. (or sang). Of course I can't drive 55 is always on top. Members strangegrey
Singers that suck: * Kurt Cobain * Eddie Vedder * All singers in 90s rock bands that followed in the wake of the above two losers *Rob Halford (the guys voice makes me cringe) *Ronnie Dio " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " * Ozzy " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " * Lemmy " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " * James Hetfield " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " * Dave Mustaine " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " "

I can remember Edward saying in an interview for Rolling Stone that he was "so glad they had a real singer" and that he didn't have to tune a half step down anymore (as he had to do with Roth). Now that was good for a laugh. Especially when you think of how Dave was flying all over stage.
Members 70's Strat
Just wondering what you guys think of Justin Hawkins from The Darkness? I know he has a bit of falsetto with the higher notes but I beleive that he at least does it very well. Thoughts?
Members LaXu
My votes would go to Eddie Vedder and clones (the singer from Creed, the Nickelback guy etc. etc.). Hate that "my vocal range is the size of this dot: ." singing. Robert Plant can be pretty annoying, especially during those "baby baby baby" moments. He ruins Zeppelin for me. The Finnish band The Crash also has a REALLY annoying singer. Extremely whiny voice. They suck! I don't mind Geddy Lee though. Or Ozzy, Axl Rose and Kurt Cobain for that matter. Hmmmm..... He warbles too much. Kinda sounds like Katherine Hepburn through an octave-up pedal. Of course, there is also very little metal that I can actually stomach. Members Urban Ghandi
I know this is all subjective... But for Hard Rock/Metal - Dio is hard to beat! Truth be known, I always wanted to start a Dio tribute band but finding someone with RJD's skills is...well...impossible.

Hmmmm..... Dio and Ray Gillen are my favorite singers - but everyone is entitled to their opinions. I think Dio's singing has had a huge influence on many rock bands that followed. My vote goes to Zakk Wylde. I find his singing comical.
Members Extasyguy
The singer from Moonspell Ozzy Tom Araya Chris Barnes The new Darkness- I liked the vocals on their old hit but this new stuff is corny IMO. Nickelback on that Photograph song Slaughter Andrea(the guy) from Lacuna Coil Jack White Staind Violent Femmes EDIT: Steve Vai on his latest record I think Don Dokken rules, so does Dave Mustaine so go figure. Members kannibul
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but... DLR. Why? You listen to a whole CD of him, and you're annoyed. Imagine having him in the band. Look, I like hearing DLR in small quantities, but, too much DLR has to be unhealthy. Scott Stapp - I dunno, the guy's voice just pisses me off. Scott Wieland - zero vocal range, and, he sounds like the singer in my last band, which is even more "ammo"
