you know, i like johnny cash & i like nine inch nails but i've never liked the johnny cash's cover of "hurt". i went to junior high (the worst two years of anyone's life) in the town of folsom so i much prefer to hear him sing about murder in reno.

antony & the johnson's "hope there's someone" i find particularly chilling:

I believe this is known as an "eargasm" and yes it happens all the time :-) Tom Waits and Pink Floyd.

I know what you are meaning but that was not the thing I wanted to point out. "Hear no evil"? LOL

I mean songs that are not necessary beautiful but also very dark or melancholy... something which rips your heart off like the songs I put as examples.

"September 15th" by Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays - recorded as soon as they heard Bill Evans had passed away. Here they talk about the piece a bit as it plays in the background:

The vocals after the organ solo is just killer:

And of course, lots of Sigur Ros...

Porcupine Tree - Heart Attack in a Layby

Yes, this one does it for me, as well. I have a hard time singing to it while it plays. Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd and The Last Voyage by Gentle Giant also do that to me. I guess it resounds inside.

There are songs that almost brought me to tears after hearing them while sleeping. One day while taking a nap and listening to a new age station on my TV, Lydia by Tim Story came on. I woke up immediately after it finished with a profound sadness upon me. Once while sleeping the night through, Dove Song by Celestial Wind did the same thing to me by inspiring a dream that filled me with a tremendous sense of loss.

John Martyn - May You Never

Fleetwood Mac - Landslide

Brian Eno - An Ending (Ascent)

Genesis - Entangled

David Gilmour is another eargasm expert - in particular the guitar figure before the last verse of "Echoes" (about 18:15) and the pedal steel solo at the end of "High Hopes"

Prince Purple Rain
Reminds me of all the bad things I have done in my life but it also brings me peace and joy and hope for my future.
Mum and Dad and friends and family:
I am sorry for all the wrong and bad things I have done in my life.
Nothing can change all the bad things of my past.
But I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me.
My demons are still lurking.
People still ask me why I ran away from home and did the things I did and the answer is I thought I was doing the right thing.
But it wasn't the right thing.
Anyways hope you understand what I did.

Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan - 1972

)

Great track, but I've never heard it played on American radio. I finally heard the tune for the first time in this episode of Maison Ikkoku (song goes on around 9min):

That particular scene isn't overly dramatic, but because of an earlier scene in the episode (around 5:20 to 6:30), it seems to make folks cry by the time they get to it. It's the episode that explains how this woman named her dog after her late husband. The song really fits her because she's a widow.

I watched it Japanese w/ English subtitles, not the Italian presented here, but this version wasn't blocked by Warner due to the O'Sullivan track.

Oh have I. So many sad songs out there that bring tears to my eyes. I'm an emotional guy like you and some songs have this deep effect on me to the point I feel I'm in a different world. I mostly listen to Trance and many many Trance songs have this effect and there are lots of sad Trance songs that make me tear up. I don't mind that cause I have {censored}ty and sad life and sad songs is what suit my mood most of the time. Many sad songs to list all but I think John Denver's "Annie's Song" is probably one of the saddest. If you listen to Trance then Rank 1's "Breathing" is one of the best tunes EVER. I think it's beyond description. Sarah Mclachlan's "Ordinary Miracle" is another good song. I also like Milk Inc.'s "Living a lie" and "forever". They have the tune that I always go for.

I tour around as a FOH sound tech for an ABBA tribute band from Sweden called Arrival www.arrival.se The first gig I did for them, many of the songs brought tears to my eyes. They are very beautiful songs (both the sad and happy). It was slightly unconfortable to be standing there, surrounded by people and choking up.

I generally feel emotional when I'm sharing a song/album that I love with friends and family that know and love the song/album too. It feels good to share the love of music with those you are close with. I am a sap, yes.

Some great tear jerker examples here. I didn't know KSS had so many touchy feely types.
