this is what I don't understand. Who is subjecting you to anything? You are free to ignore every single OT thread on this board. Noone is holding a gun to your head forcing you to read them. If you see OT in the title, then skip along by. On the other hand, if we were to ban all off topic threads because you and others don't like them then you are indeed imposing your will on others.

I'm not disagreeing with you, in fact I'm agreeing. My point was that the thread was soliciting opinions, and I expressed mine. You quoted and took exception to it in what I viewed a hypocritical way.

When all is said and done this thread will be pointless, the forum will not change. Which is a good thing in my opinion. I come here everyday because it is what it is and I enjoy it. I may disagree with some of the posts, I may not like some of the topics, but to each their own. I can ignore what I don't like as can everyone.

IMO

well, at least yuou have a sense of humor.
All I can tell you is it seems you have a habit of closing and locking threads more so than any other mod I can think of presently.
Whether you continue this tendancy remains to be seen.

I don't agree with that. Show me some proof.

And if I do lock a thread, I will always give a reason.

I don't mind OT thread since it adds variety. You can only talk about the best high gain amp so many times.

I avoid all Political and religious threads because I've never seen an internet arguement won on those topics yet. If the discussion is civil and reasonable I have no problem with those kinds of threads. It seems lately that the purpose of the religious threads in particular has been nothing more than to hammer on Christians in an insulting and derogatory way. I would have the same problems with threads that hammer on Muslims, Hindus or Atheists so that's not the issue. I don't like gay bashing either. The issue is the insults and personal attacks which inevitably follow threads on those subjects.

I say keep the threads clean and they can stay. If they start to be come nothing more than personal attacks, move them or lock them. I certainly don't want this board to turn into open jam. If it does, I'll spend alot less time here.

But that's just the problem, those threads (religious, political) never stay personal. They turn into slag fests where everyone's trying to prove everyone else "wrong." And who needs that noise, quite frankly?

I say, let's keep personal beliefs what they should be.....personal. Saying you believe is one thing, and saying you don't believe is another. Fine. But trying to force the issue onto those who either do or don't believe is nothing more than a pissing contest.

..and if folks like Skidmarx are worried about losing their ability to create pissing contests here on this board, well, need i say more?

I look at boards like The Gear Page, and they seem to do quite well without all the bickering and hurt feelings. I think here, some sort of "happy medium" can be achieved here. Really doesn't speak to much of a community if folks are pissed off at one another, that's my 0.02

you've done it to me several times, or in threads I may not have authored myslef but was participating in only to find it closed. And then there's the "you know" thread right there on the front page where you threatened to ban anyone who brought it up again. Some mysterious "people" were tired of it. I wonder who they were?

But you know what? That being said, This is a privately owned business and if they want threads banned or closed then that's their business. I don't have to like it and can take my business elsewhere. IMO the only legitimate reason to lock a thread is if there is racial attacks or porn involved. Everything else should be left alone. I do not believe that "because whiners are complaing about it" is a legitimate reason. {censored} 'em, they don't have to participate in a thread they don't like. Just my opinion.

i think someone should lay down pretty clear rules of what's acceptable here and what is not

over the last year or so a lot of threads have vanished with no explanation...now i'm sure most of them had a good reason behind that, but rarely does anyone get such an explanation

if it were laid out that "this...will get your thread deleted" and "this...will get you banned" i think things would be a lot smoother here

So, we should allow slagging and personal attacks, so long as they're not racist in nature? We should allow tons of off-topic stuff, to the point that it dilutes what the forum was created for (not that that's the case, but it could happen).

All I'm trying to get at here is that we have this massive off-topic forum with Open Jam. We have a massive forum for political discussions. To me, it seems redundant to have both of these forums, yet allow discussions on these topics in all the other forums. I get that people tend to frequent only one or two forums here, but at some point I think it's valuable to assess the way things are arranged here and clean it up to some extent (the layout and forum arrangement, not content). That's really all I'm trying to do with this thread...find out what people like/don't like. I find myself asking questions like, "Do we really need a political forum if people are having political discussions in the other forums? Do we need two off-topic forums, just because the off-topic discussion in one is too fast-paced or inappropriate for many people?" Where does it end?

I know LOTS of people on these forums think that we're all just iron-fisted dickheads that arbitrarily lock and delete threads as we feel. But that's really not the case. I've only moderated one thread that didn't come via a reported post, and that's because it was racist in nature, which you said yourself is fine.

Forum rules.

Everyone has to agree to these rules when they sign up. Does this mean that stuff that is against the rules never gets posted? No. We can't read through every single thread on the forum. When stuff that is against the rules is brought to our attention, whether it's through a reported post or our own interaction on the site, it gets dealt with.

Think of it like a highway. You've got thousands of people driving thousands of cars, but how many cops are out there? How many people who are speeding get caught? We can't catch everything, yet some people twist this into "You're hypocrites."

Seems pretty straight forward to me. I'm not buying the argument that because people don't want to stray from the amp forum they should be free to post whatever they want. If OT threads are curtailed here, mosey over to another forum for your OT stuff. You'll probably find some of your amp forum buddies have done the same thing.

+1

You're not going to get any sympathy from me for having to *gasp* click different links when you're on the internet.

If you were referring to me about this, I wasn;t looking for sympathy, so no worries there.

But you DON'T think it would kinda suck to have a few off-topic posts and wonder where everyone is at the moment? SPend half the time chasing each other around.

Hey listen it's no big deal. I tell ya what you should do. Instead of pissing and moaning (on both sides.....inlcuding the mods)....just NO OFF TOPIC THREADS.

Simple.

And the forum members have a clear understanding of what is allowed, the mods have job security.

Not saying I want it like that, but the issue is becoming more aggravating than ANY of the off topic threads.

You seem to be the only one aggravated by the discussion.

As far as chasing people around and wondering where everybody is, we do have a nice PM function that allows you to talk with your friends no matter which forum they may be browsing or posting in.

i agree with 17 tubes.

you either have this forum as JUST an amp forum or you don't censor anything.

singling out religion and politics is a stupid idea. surely these two subjects are the most important in this current world climate of corrupt governments and the religions they hide behind.

so either stop all OT threads or leave it how it is.

if they did that then EVERYONE would get banned, you included. And me too. That policy is simple unrealistic. You simply can't have an online BB without some violations of all that jazz. Most of it makes sense. But some of it involves perpective. For instance: what offends you may not offend me. Now what? Who wins. I do, of course.;)

Aggravating going thru this debate every couple weeks or so.

Hmmm...more PM's huh? Gosh another great feature.

Are you a mod? If this (your post) is the trrend of mod attitude, i can SEE why there's so many "problems" around here.

"aggravated".....not really. What do you care anyway? Obviously zip.

Making the forums acceptable to all users is an impossible goal. But you can clear up a couple of OT problems in one fell swoop. Create a sticky political thread and a sticky religion thread at the top of the page. Move everything OT involving those topics to the stickys. That gives everyone a chance to rip into each other over those `o so personal subjects, yet doesnt mire the forum down in tons of seperate OT political/religious threads.

Problem solved there. We will all know where they are and they can easily be monitered and controlled/maintained. Also easily avoided by the many plyers who would rather spend time talking about gear and naked chicks.

For the most part, the rest of the OT topics are like the spice of the forum. As much as I love gear, I still want a little spice to it.

The religious and political threads get old, but the piping hot fart thread rocked!

Seriously, the only thing that sucks about OT threads is that something retarded like an Al Gore thread bumps a good thread with sound clips down to page 2 in no time.

I don't like Al Gore. I bet Al Gore doesn't even like Al Gore, and I'm sure he'd be disappointed to see good threads get sunk by threads about him.

Afterall, when he spoke about global warming, he wasn't talking about glowing tubes or piping hot farts.

Yeah lately the Stupider OT stuff has been taking over. Agreed on political topic threads have no place here at all. Some of the OT stuff is ok but more disgusting and stranger subjects just keep popping up. I stay away a bit more as of late because of this.Like when I see more off topic threads than on topic(amps, music, performers,etc..) A bit more like the guitar forum as far as on topic would be cool IMO. But Im sure the guy's whom Love too run with scissors in their hands all the time will not like my stance.

Go back and look at about 10 pages of past posts and tell me you dont see some crazy WOT {censored} posted constantly on the amp forum.
