"What I've kept with me, and what I've thrown away,
And where the hell I've ended up on this glary, random day,
The things I really cared about, just left along the way,
For being to pent up and proud"

Ben Folds Five 'Evaporated' - just it's honesty.

"She was 15 years old and she'd never seen the ocean,
She jumped into a van with a vagabond,
The last thing she said was, 'I love you Mom'
And a little rain never hurt no one."

A little Rain - Tom Waits - love it's ambiguity and it's colour.

My favourite song lyric is by Bob Dylan from "Seven Curses", a song i love for many reasons, but mainly for this lyric, only the great Bob could pull this one off. Outside the context of the song it is still compelling and moving, within the song it is an emotional climax, when Bob utters the immortal words:

"Get on your horse and ride away"

Sting, "Fortress Around Your Heart." The entire song is full of rich, great metaphors but I'll just post the first verse.

under the ruins of a walled city
crumbling towers and beams of yellow light
no flags of truce, no cries of pity
the siege guns had been pounding all through the night
it took a day to build the city
we walked through its streets in the afternoon
as I returned across the field's I'd known
I recognized the walls that I once made
I had to stop in my tracks for fear
of walking on the mines I'd laid

I love most of his lyrical output with the Police also... name dropping Scylla and Charybdis "in Wrapped Around Your Finger" was just awesome.

Squeeze, Cool For Cats:

"Shape down at the disco and i think i've got a pull,
I ask her loads of questions as she hangs on to the wall.
I kiss her for the first time and then i take her home,
I'm invited in for coffee and i give the dog a bone..."

I think we've all 'given a dog a bone' after a heavy night out, havent we? Although some more than others

Come down in time - Elton John / Bernie Taupen (sp?)

In the quiet silent seconds I turned off the light switch
And I came down to meet you in the half light the moon left
While a cluster of night jars sang some songs out of tune
A mantle of bright light shone down from a room

Come down in time I still hear her say
So clear in my ear like it was today
Come down in time was the message she gave to me
Come down in time and I'll meet you half way

Well I don't know if I should have heard her as yet
But a true love like hers is a hard love to get
And I've walked most all the way and I ain't heard her call
And I'm getting to thinking if she's coming at all

Come down in time I still hear her say
So clear in my ear like it was today
Come down in time was the message she gave to me
Come down in time and I'll meet you half way

There are women and women and some hold you tight
While some leave you counting the stars in the night

Sting's version of this song on the "Two rooms" tribute CD is incredibly moving IMO.

Pumpkin Heaven :o

[verse1]

Oh yeah, All right !!
Just another Saturday night
Pumpkins here and over there
Smashing them in, say a prayer

[chorus]

Orange crust, fiber rot
High speed flingin, smokin pot
Shattered dreams, broken shell
Stolen goods, going to hell

[verse2]

Pumpkin this, far away
Streets are cold, scattered hay
Life is fast, never fails
Pumpkin death, rebels yell

[verse3]

Rip the face, kick it in
Orange treads, tale tell sin
Run and scream, fall and cry
Nailed your tracks, blackend eye

[chorus]

Orange crust, fiber rot
High speed flingin, smokin pot
Shattered dreams, broken shell
Stolen goods, going to hell

Orange crust, fiber rot
High speed flyin, out of pot
Shattered dreams, out of gas
Stolen goods, they kicked your ass

Orange crust, fiber rot
High speed flyin, out of pot
Shattered dreams, out of gas
Stolen goods, they kicked your ass.... :(

This always trips me out because I wonder if he's talking about the devil betraying God, Judas betraying Jesus, or Adam lying to God. It's a cool lyric anyways.

interesting

I've always took that line as The Bang Theory is a lie.

it's an all time favorite line of mine, too

Leif Erikson-Interpol

She says
It helps with the lights out
Her rabid glow
Is like braille to the night
She swears
I'm a slave to the details
But if your life is such a big joke
Why should I care?

The clock is set for nine
But you know you're gonna make it eight
So that you two can take some time
Teach each other to reciprocate

She feels that my sentimental side
Should be held with kids gloves
But she doesn't know
That I left my urge in the icebox

She swears
I'm just prey to the female
Well then hook me up and throw me baby cakes
Cause I like to get hooked

The clock is set for nine
But you know you're gonna make it eight
All the people that you've loved
They're all bound to leave some keepsakes

I've been swinging all the time
Think it's time to learn your way
I picture you and me together
In the jungle it will be ok

I'll bring you when my lifeboat
Sails through the night
That is supposing that
You don't sleep tonight

It's like learning a new language
Helps me catch up on my mind
If you don't bring up those lonely parts
This could be a good time

It's like learning a new language
You come here to me
We'll collect those lonely parts
And set them down
You come here to me...

She says brief things
Her love's a pony
My love's subliminal

She says brief things
Her love's a pony
My love's subliminal

Just a few that popped into my head...

A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras
"Threw you the obvious
and you flew with it on your back..."

Pearl Jam - Black
"I know some day you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky..."

"And so castle's made of sand melt into the sea, eventually..."
-Jimi Hendrix

This song soothes my soul...I want it played at my funeral, no lie...

"Goin home, goin home
by the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul

Goin to plant a weeping willow
On the banks green edge it will grow grow grow
Sing a lullaby beside the water
Lovers come and go - the river roll roll roll

Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul" - Brokedown Palace, Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia

Neil Young:

"Tell Me Why"

"Sailing heart-ships
thru broken harbors
Out on the waves in the night
Still the searcher
must ride the dark horse
Racing alone in his fright.
Tell me why, tell me why

Is it hard to make
arrangements with yourself,
When you're old enough to repay
but young enough to sell?..."

I spend so much time
Believing all the lies
To keep the dream alive
Now it makes me sad
It makes me mad at truth
For loving what was you

eyes without a face

Now I close my eyes
And I wonder why
I don't despise
Now all I can do
Is love what was once
So alive and new
But it's gone from your eyes
I'd better realise

"Billy Idol - Eyes Without a Face"

Small Change (Got Rained on with His Own .38)- Tom Waits

Small Change got rained on with his own thirty-eight,
And nobody flinched down by the arcade
And the marquees weren't weeping, they went stark-raving mad,
And the cabbies were the only ones that really had it made
And his cold trousers were twisted, and the sirens high and shrill,
And crumpled in his fist was a five-dollar bill
And the naked mannequins with their Cheshire grins,
And the raconteurs and roustabouts said "Buddy, come on in, 'cause
'Cause the dreams ain't broken down here now, they're walking with a limp
Now that Small Change got rained on with his own thirty-eight"

And nobody flinched down by the arcade
And the burglar alarm's been disconnected,
And the newsmen start to rattle
And the cops are telling jokes about some whorehouse in Seattle
And the fire hydrants plead the Fifth Amendment
And the furniture is bargains galore
But the blood is by the jukebox on an old linoleum floor
And what a hot rain on Forty-Second Street,
And now the umbrellas ain't got a chance
And the newsboy's a lunatic with stains on his pants, 'cause
'Cause Small Change got rained on with his own thirty-eight

And no one's gone over to close his eyes
And there's a racing form in his pocket,
Circled "Blue Boots" in the third
And the cashier at the clothing store didn't say a word
As the siren tears the night in half, and someone lost his wallet
Well, a surveillance of assailance, it that's what you want to call it
And the whores hike up their skirts and fish for drug-store prophylactics
With their mouths cut just like razor blades and their eyes are like stilettos
And her radiator's steaming and her teeth are in a wreck, and nah,
She won't let you kiss her, but what the hell do you expect?
And the Gypsies are tragic and if you want to buy perfume,
Well, they'll bark you down like carneys, sell you Christmas cards in June, but
But Small Change got rained on with his own thirty-eight

And his headstone's a gumball machine,
No more chewing gum or baseball cards or overcoats or dreams
Someone's hosing down the sidewalk, and he's only in his teens, 'cause
'Cause Small Change got rained on with his own thirty-eight

And a fistful of dollars can't change that,
And someone copped his watch fob, and someone got his ring
And the newsboy got his porkpie Stetson hat
And the tuberculosis old men at the Nelson wheeze and cough
And someone will head south until this whole thing cools off, 'cause
'Cause Small Change got rained on with his own thirty-eight, yeah,
Small Change got rained on with his own thirty-eight

Singapore- Tom Waits

We sail tonight for Singapore, we're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny Moor, took off to the land of Nod
Drank with all the Chinamen, walked the sewers of Paris
I danced along a colored wind, dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me

We sail tonight for Singapore, don't fall asleep while you're ashore
Cross your heart and hope to die when you hear the children cry
Let marrow bone and cleaver choose while making feet for children shoes
Through the alley, back from hell, when you hear that steeple bell
You must say goodbye to me

Wipe him down with gasoline 'til his arms are hard and mean
So heave away, boys

We sail tonight for Singapore, take your blankets from the floor
Wash your mouth out by the door, the whole town's made of iron ore
Every witness turns to steam, they all become Italian dreams
Fill your pockets up with earth, get yourself a dollar's worth
Away boys, away boys, heave away

The captain is a one-armed dwarf, he's throwing dice along the wharf
In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king, so take this ring

We sail tonight for Singapore, we're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny Moor, took off to the land of Nod
Drank with all the Chinamen, walked the sewers of Paris
I drank along a colored wind, I dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me

Jesus Gonna Be Here- Tom Waits

Well, Jesus will be here
Be here soon
He's gonna cover us up with leaves
With a blanket from the moon
With a promise and a vow
And a lullaby for my brow
Jesus gonna be here
Be here soon

Well I'm just gonna wait here
I don't have to shout
I have no reason and
I have no doubt
I'm gonna get myself
Unfurled from this mortal coiled up world
Because Jesus gonna be here
Be here soon

I got to keep my eyes open
So I can see my Lord
I'm gonna watch the horizon.
For a brand new Ford

I can hear him rolling on down the lane
I said Hollywood be thy name
Jesus gonna be
Gonna be here soon

Well I've been faithful
And I've been so good
Except for drinking
But he knew what I would
I'm gonna leave this place better
Than the way I found it was
And Jesus gonna be here
Be here soon

Slipstream (Ian Anderson)

Well the lush separation unfolds you
and the products of wealth
push you along on the bow wave
of the spiritless undying selves.
And you press on God's waiter your last dime
as he hands you the bill.
And you spin in the slipstream
timeless -_ unreasoning
paddle right out of the mess.

Cheap Day Return (Ian Anderson)

On Preston platform
do your soft shoe shuffle dance.
Brush away the cigarette ash that's
falling down your pants.
And you sadly wonder
does the nurse treat your old man
the way she should.
She made you tea,
asked for your autograph
what a laugh.

Life Is A Long Song (Ian Anderson)

When you're falling awake and you take stock of the new day,
and you hear your voice croak as you choke on what you need to say,
well, don't you fret, don't you fear,
I will give you good cheer.

Life's a long song.
Life's a long song.
Life's a long song.

If you wait then your plate I will fill.

As the verses unfold and your soul suffers the long day,
and the twelve o'clock gloom spins the room,
you struggle on your way.
Well, don't you sigh, don't you cry,
lick the dust from your eye.

Life's a long song.
Life's a long song.
Life's a long song.

We will meet in the sweet light of dawn.

As the Baker Street train spills your pain all over your new dress,
and the symphony sounds underground put you under duress,
well don't you squeal as the heel grinds you under the wheel.

Life's a long song.
Life's a long song.
Life's a long song.

But the tune ends too soon for us all.

Just makes me smile:)

and from the same song;

"We'll eat meat and mashed potatos

cut our hair so folks don't hate us"

That cracks me up, "rhyming potatos" and "hate us"

How about the lyrics to "Vincent" (otherwise known as "Starry Starry Night". Very skilled use of alliteration if you ask me.

:D :D :DHyperballad by Bjork :D :D :D

"...imagine what my body would sound like
slamming against those rocks

and when it lands
will my eyes be closed or open?"

I just like it because it makes sense in a horrible sort of way. All of Bjork's songs are like 'zat. ^_^
