This part absolutely kills me everytime I hear it: Mother remember the night that the dog HAD her pups in the pantry?Blood on the floor, fleas on their paws,And you cried 'til the morningThe upshot, I think, is that the mother dog dies in childbirth, leaving the puppies alone... ("blood on the floor, fleas on their paws" -- the fleas wouldn't normally leave the mother unless she was dead). The chorus gives a little bit of hope: So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgottenSons are like birds, flying always over the mountainBut, really, for me, it's that pivotal image... the human mother crying over the dead dog and her orphaned puppies.
