"There's a rainbow of babies draped over the graveyard,

where all the dead sailors wait for their brides.

And the cold, bitter, snow has strangled each grassblade,

and the salt from their tears washed away with the tide.

Oh, I smiled on the Wabash, the last time I passed it,

yes, I gave her a wink from the passenger side,

and my foot fell asleep as I swallowed my candy,

knowing he was in heaven before he died."

John Prine

I know it's more than a line, but what the hell, it's great stuff.

"Everyone I love is...dead"

-Type O Negative

"Outside the soundness of your mind,

Bathing your soul in silver tears,

Beneath a blackened summer sky,

Praying for time to disappear"

-Dream Theater

"Spend some quality time, with this demon of mine. I like the way you struggle, but you know I'm here to win"

-InFlames

"Mother of creation wait, with this belt of skulls strap me down and sail this ship away..."

-Mudvayne

There's so much more...:)

"She won't be forced against her will,

She don't do drugs but she does the pill, oh yeah...."

Teenage Fanclub "The Concept"

"She's the cheese and I'm the macaroni...."

Beastie Boys "Get it Together"

"She said, 'I know what it's like to be dead...'"

because "she" = "Peter Fonda" and "I know what it's like to be dead" = "I know what it's like to have a famous dad, a hot-ass sister, and Dennis Hopper to write a classic movie for me"

The Beatles "She Said, She Said"

I have been wearing out Bob Dylan "Love and Theft" the last few weeks.

My backs been up against the wall so long it feels like it's stuck,

Why don't you break my heart one more time, just for good luck.

I'm driving in the flats in a Cadillac car, the girls all say your a worn out star. But my pockets are loaded and I'm spending every dime.

Summer Days.

A child's rhyme stuck in my head.

It said that life is but a dream.

I've spent so many years in question

to find I've known this all along.

"So good to see you.

I've missed you so much.

So glad it's over.

I've missed you so much

Came out to watch you play.

Why are you running?"

Shroud-ing all the ground around me

Is this holy crow above me.

Black as holes within a memory

And blue as our new second sun.

I stick my hand into his shadow

To pull the pieces from the sand.

Which I attempt to reassemble

To see just who I might have been.

I do not recognize the vessel,

But the eyes seem so familiar.

Like phosphorescent desert buttons

Singing one familiar song...

"So good to see you.

I've missed you so much.

So glad it's over.

I've missed you so much.

Came out to watch you play.

Why are you running away?"

Doh! :p

I have always heard it as ugly, which meant I really liked the justaposition of the statement. Damn, now the line is next to meaningless, thanks for ruining a great song ;):p

right on, I love sturmer...."I still get heartburn, when I think about all of the stamps I ate"

Here are some of my faves (sorry I can't just do one)

"I don't know how much more of this I can take

she's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake"

"Two newspaper editors like playground sneaks

Running a book on which of them is going to last the week

One of them calls to me

And he says, "I know you"

"You gave me this tattoo back in '82"

"You were a spoilt child then with a record to plug"

"And I was a shaven headed seaside thug"

"Things haven't really changed that much"

"One of us is still getting paid too much"

-Elvis Costello

"could ya take me to the store and then the bank?

I've got five dollars I can put in the tank

I got a court date comin' this june

I'll be drivin' soon

Passenger...side...don't like ridin' on the passenger side"

- Jeff Tweedy (wilco)

"every artist is a cannibal

every poet is a thief

all kill their inspiration

then sing about their grief"

- Bono

"I was {censored}ed up by 5

talkin' nothing but jive

told the bartender he'd never take me alive

all of this because my favorite show

was cancelled last night on TV

so I called up marie

she'd have sex for free

for ten bucks an hour she'd listen to me

talk about rock stars and models on dope

and why I can't cope with this scene"

GREAT LINE!! One of my favorite Prine lines...

couple of other great Prine-isms.

"Two men were standing upon a bridge

One jumped and screamed you lose" (kristopherson may have written that)

"the air is just as still as the throttle on a funeral train"

One of my favorites

"I was sitting in the bathtub

Counting my toes

When the radiator broke

Water all froze

I got stuck in the ice

Without my clothes

Naked as the eyes of a clown"

I love this one because he's just being completely silly in the entire song. Perfectly crafted lyrics, but nothing too heavy...just being funny, and then he just NAILS you with the last line "naked as the eyes of a clown" That's a metaphor for the history books if I've ever heard one!!

and if I show you my dark side

would you still hold me... tonight?

And if I open my heart to you

And show you my weak side

What would you do?

-Roger waters.

There's flies in the kitchen

I can hear em they're buzzin'

And I aint done nothin'

Since I woke up today.

How the hell can a person

Go to work in the mornin'

Come home in the evening

And have nothin' to say.

-John Prine

Oh a false clock tries to tick out my time

To disgrace, distract, and bother me

And the dirt of gossip blows into my face

And the dust of rumors covers me

But if the arrow is straight

And the point is slick

It can pierce through dust no matter how thick

So I'll make my stand

And remain as I am

And bid farewell and not give a damn.

Dylan has too many to even begin to mention. But actually my favorite comes from a T-Bone tune (it's not his writing, I don't know who wrote this).

Science is busy making new thing out of old/The love I have for you is slowly turning cold/History has turned another page/I used to love you darling but this is a different age

Remember, this was in the mid 40's in the US, times were looking good and science and the industry was going to save the world.

A line can be made great by how it's sung too. Another T-Bone favorite is this one:

You don't love me and I don't even care/I can get a woman like you baby anyplace, anywhere

The thing is that he sings it with this cold voice, he really sounds like he means it.

My favorite Dylan line is probably the one from Union Sundown:

You know capitalism is above the law, it says it don't count less it sells/If it costs too much to build it at home you just buy it cheaper someplace else

i'll throw out a handful for y'all;

"all i ever learned from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you"- leonard cohen

"iconoclastics had it coming for years- they know the prisons you have yet to fear"- cedric bixler-zavala, argueably my favorite current lyricist

"the air was smoking, the streets were dry, and i wasn't joking when i said goodbye"- ani difranco, who did this song better on living in clip than anywhere else

"silent scenes in motion means i'll wake you when we're there/time, it seems, in broken dreams, to sleep beside the stair"-phish, becase tom marshall is easily the robert hunter of our time

and, of course, the tom waits quote in my sig.

You got that yellowjacket touch

and your sting, it hurts so much

you're such a bastard. - Ian Hunter

Marie Provost did not look her best

when the cops busted into her lonely nest

in that cheap hotel down on Hollywood West

July '29.

She'd been lying there for 2 or 3 weeks

Neighbors said they never heard a squeak

But hungry eyes that could not speak

said, "Even little doggies have got to eat"

She was a winner, 'til she became her doggie's dinner

She never meant that much to me.

Oh, poor Marie. - Nick Lowe

1.) "Suit me if I play too long." Deacon's Blues - Steely Dan

2.) "Dawn came in this mawnin' like a junk-yard melody."

Harbor Lights - Boz Scaggs

3.) "Then one night as I went down to the Commodore Hotel,

I chanced to meet a bartender who said he knew her well.

And as he handed me a drink he began to hum a song;

and all the boys sittin' at the bar began sing along.

If you'll be my Dixie Chickin'...."

Dixie Chicken - Little Feat.

That's all I can think of right now...but there will be more.
