Members Pete
Has anyone had experience with both of these speakers and how are they different tone wise? I think blackbacks came out after greenbacks but not sure.
Members petejt
I wasn't aware of a speaker called the "Blackback"? Or do you mean just the later Celestion speakers?
Members Pete
I thought they were called blackbacks but could be wrong. I was told that they sound pretty close to greenbacks but the speaker magnet is black.
Members rememberduane
They are called blackbacks... They came out before greenbacks AFAIK. I haven't A/B'ed them, but I had some Scumback Blackback repros and they were incredible.
Members danyeo
I owned a cab loaded with 1970 Greenbacks and a cab from 78 with Blackbacks. They are both 25 watt speakers but Blackbacks came out in the mid 70's. I thought the Blackbacks were a little bit brighter than Greenbacks. Both sounded great though. Have you tried those Stan Specs Weber speakers yet? I bought four of them last month, loaded them in my Uberkab and I really like them.
Members ocnor
The blackbacks that I have are G12H 30 made in 1978. They are very similar to greenbacks but they handle 30 watts instead of 25.
Members tietjen
According to celestion they are the same speaker (green, black, white) it was just convenient and cheaper to get whatever color was available. As long as its 25 watts and made in the 70's by celestion its a "greenback"

They also made 30 watt blackbacks but that was after Rola took over.
Members worldoftone
Mid-70's Blackbacks I have are "darker" IMO compared to my early 70's Greenbacks. - WOT

Members ocnor
i thought at one point they made 65 watt blackbacks?i'm confused They made G12-65 which are not blackbacks but they are really good sounding speakers. I have two G12-65 and two G12H-30 blackbacks in my model 1982 4x12 cab. Every amp that I've played through that cab sounds amazing.
Members Ancient Mariner
Celestion do not code their speakers by the colour of the magnet cover. The speaker known as the greenback is the G12M. These were available in 20W and 25W handling versions, as well as with 75hz and 55hz cones. The G12H has also been shipped with green and black magnet covers.
