Members Chrisjd
Coming from a huge In Flames fan, I must admit, the best(my favorite) melodic death metal album goes to these guys... I STRONGLY recommend you pick their album up. Members Exocaster
I'd take Colony or Slaughter Of The Soul over either. I think the only Dark Tranquillity I really, really got into when I was listening to metal all the time was Haven, which is the one I'm supposed to dislike. I still to this day think that's a good record. I never really got on with CoB.

Members jnurp
not a fan of the genre. I much prefer melodic black metal groups and one in particular i really love is Enslaved. melodic death sounds like John Phillip Sousa with growling vocals to me, i just cant get into this stuff. Members Aibric
If you're going to pick a DT album as being the best melodic death metal album, it ought to be The Gallery. That album was excellent and full of unique songs. Every album since then has gotten more and more redundant.

Members Exocaster
Artifacts Of The Black Rain is a cool song. I always preferred Whoracle and Colony to Jester Race, but that's a good one. I saw them live a bunch in the pre-Reroute days, and they busted that out occasionally. Members Aibric
This was always one of my favorites: pI8PyMUK14c Hearing this album back in 95-96 was kind of mind blowing. There wasn't really anything like it at the time. Edit: After this album all their stuff started sounding like the rest of the 'Gothenburg" scene IMO, with the exception of when they started getting softer. The Gallery was much more progressive and varied than the rest of the melodic stuff that was out, not just being an album full of double-time drum beats and stuff.
