Members cratz2
Anyone here mod the Top Boost channel of the Vox AC15H1TV? I have one and while I love the EF86 channel, I find the general character of the Top Boost channel to be brighter and more gritty than I really like. I know it's apples and oranges... or at least two different varieties of apples... but I played through an AC15HW1 and, while I'm not likely to buy one, I definitely got along with the Normal Channel more than the Top Boost channel. So... any easy mods to get me close? Basically knocking the gain down a bit and just getting a less bright vibe. I appreciate your help.
Members Cirrus
It's part of the character of the channel. I did a mod to my ac30's top boost channel that reduces the gain, but it also reduces the bass a little which isn't what you want by the sounds of it. Have you tried removing the bright cap? Members newholland
why don't you just put a 5751 in that channels input stage? modding it should be a last resort- and lower gain tubes are pretty abundant. you might also have pickups that're too hot. (meanwhiles-- just pulled the schematic-- it's V2. throw one of these in there - http://www.tubedepot.com/nos-5751jan.html, and turn your tone pot down.. no mods necessary)
Members jimSG
Yeah, try clipping the bright cap. Can't say for sure how to locate it on that model.
Members jimSG
Newholland has a good point. But if you do the bright cap mod carefully, it is reversible.
Members leadfootdriver
There's a 120p cap in the C22 spot. Lifting 1 leg of this cap should lower the highs a bit. If you like it better in, then just re-solder that leg. http://www.blueguitar.org/new/schem/vox/ac15htvh1_handwired.pdf

This mod made me like a channel I previously couldn't stand. Thanks again.
