Old Marshalls are funny, you can have two identical models side by side and they can sound different.

Some say the vertical are the best, but i have a midwest Marshall expert right down the street who has an early 800 with horizontal inputs and it's a smokin hot amp.

Try it before you buy it if possible.

They are all good however, there was some changes in horizontal input models filtering (100 watt 2203 models only) which some people claim had an adverse effect on the tone. Like has been said before, there are good ones and then there are great ones from any given year. Try them out if you can.

The horizontal input 2203s had reduced filtering and didn't sound as good IMHO.
The horizontal inputs is also a sign that the input jacks are mounted to the PCB.

The horizontal input 2204s (50 watts) didn't have the reduced filtering and sound the same as the vertical input ones.

The oldest ones had the greatest variability IMO. The factory wasn't funded as well in the early days and they would substitute parts whenever they ran short (with different component values).
