Plans for a 2x15" bass cabinet?

I'm looking to build a 2x15" bass cabinet with my Dad. I've got two 1x15" cabinets that I will rob the speakers from. I was planning on building it based upon common production 2x15" dimensions (roughly 38x15x18). What I'm really unsure of is how many / what size ports should I be using? Does anyone have plans for such a beast or know where I could find them?

thanks,

james

you're probably going to want to taylor your enclosure to your specific speakers. if you can find out your thiele-small properties (you might try http://www.thielesmall.com for that, although i couldn't find my emv15b's in there, so...) you could use a program like bassbox (http://www.ht-audio.com/pages/BassBoxLite.html) or a freeware program like it (sorry no link to suggest). if you're just interested in throwing some speakers in a box w/o worring about if it's the right one, i might suggest the tl606dw plans that should be available from the electro voice website.

okay, i couldn't find the builders plans for it, but i think that you're looking for something like this ( http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/Speakers/EDS/TL606DW%20EDS.pdf ), yes?

you might be able to get away with trying to average the overal cab. volume and vent volume of these two. to suit two speakers instead of one or four.

http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/Builders%20Plans/TL606%20Builders%20Plans.pdf (what i'm playing these days, with the correct speaker, of course. i love it). and

http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/Builders%20Plans/TL606Q%20Builders%20Plans.pdf (WOW!!!)

YOU SHOULD REALLY BUILD THE CABINET AROUND THE SPECIFIC SPEAKER THOUGH.

also, IMO, 2 15" cabs is preferrable to 1 2x15. i used to only bring in one of my 15's if the show was small (or i was going to be going through the house system) and would split my two 15"s to either side of the stage when we were playing bigger places where i either wouldn't be going through the p.a. or big stages with no monitors. or you can stack them for that "rock look" ;)

anyway, hope that helped, sorry i couldn't find plans for the tl606dw. they should've been there.

I disagree.

Most bass guitar speakers have very similar thiele-small parameters. If you stay within the industry norms for cabinet volume, and intended driver application, you will have no issues. If you were trying to make a $100 pioneer sub sound like an Ampeg, you'd want to taylor the enclosure to the driver, to minimize the chances that you'll have a crappy sounding box.

That said...if you plan on making a ported (vented, bass reflex) enclosure, it couldn't hurt to look at some T/S params...and even then I wouldn't recommend it. WinISD is a decent program...but it's mainly useful for plotting freq response, as it assumes the enclosure will be utilized in an anechoic chamber...(not reality)

In summation, use bass guitar speakers and build it to a "normal" size. Don't port it, and don't worry.

I've build several Bass and Guitar cabinets...as well as competition car audio systems. Holla if you need anything else.

I believe apendecto is another good resource on this subject. yo:idea:

Those all look like PA cabinets and he's building a Bass Guitar cabinet.

True, but in my experience many bass cabs bear a striking resemblance to full range PA cabs b/c of the nature of reproducing the full range of bass guitar frequencies.

That being said a more specific link would be to this simple cab plan which is pretty much a sealed box with specs for various speaker sizes:
