Members baronvonsalsa
I have heard of hot pickups but I am not really sure what they are or what they do. What exactly are they and what makes them different from regular pickups?

There are pros and cons to higher output pickups. I tend to lean towards more medium output vintage style pickups for most applications, with a few exceptions. Let us not forget that EVH's best stuff was recorded with medium output PAF humbuckers...

Members cynicalphish
There is bigger level of output in the pickup. This allows you to attain heavy sounds from a softer amp...
Members geddins81
A great example of a hot pup (IMO) is the Gibson 500t. It comes stock in the bridge of LP Classics. It has ceramic magnets, and is very hot....too much so for me. I play more Blues and Classic Rock stuff, so it doesn't fit my style, but sounds great on high gain stuff...again...IMO

At least that is what he has always said. Hot pickups have a higher output. They put more millivolts into the front of your amp for more gain, volume, overdrive, and distortion.
