what he said...this results in higher output and increased drive on your amp. There are pros and cons to higher output pickups. I tend to lean towards more medium output vintage style pickups for most applications, with a few exceptions. Let us not forget that EVH's best stuff was recorded with medium output PAF humbuckers...:o

A great example of a hot pup (IMO) is the Gibson 500t. It comes stock in the bridge of LP Classics. It has ceramic magnets, and is very hot....too much so for me. I play more Blues and Classic Rock stuff, so it doesn't fit my style, but sounds great on high gain stuff...again...IMO

At least that is what he has always said.

 

Hot pickups have a higher output. They put more millivolts into the front of your amp for more gain, volume, overdrive, and distortion.
