Members UstadKhanAli
It's been getting great reviews, $99....was thinking of picking one up to use on the front of a kick drum.

Waht I really would like to use is one of those EarthWorks mics, but I'm trying to keep my out-of-hand spending to a minimum this year. Someone told me that an AT4047 is very very nice for a kick drum mic, too, but I have a feeling the AT2020 will do just fine.

It won't reproduce low frequencies (below 100 hz or so), so you'd be better off using it on stuff where you want the character of a condenser mic, but with the bottom end rolled off... IMHO of course...

IMHO of course... According to this frequency response graph, there's not really much of a bottom end roll-off. It looks like it drops gradually below 100 Hz, eventually by maybe 3-4 dB before rising slightly again below 50Hz. Link to PDF file with frequency response graph http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/resource_library/literature/49f63e6efc082082/at2020_english.pdf#search='AT2020%20specifications' (I don't know why this http link thingy isn't working and I don't have time to fix this post right now...) Right now, I'm using an AT4060 which is modified, and has an absolutely sick amount of bottom end (I always have to use a high-pass filter even when the mic is several inches away on the outside and slightly off-axis), so if what you are saying is correct, this may actually help me anyway! Phil O'Keefe
No, it doesn't look flat down to 20 Hz, but it doesn't look like it should be expected to not reproduce anything below 100 Hz either. Of course, the only real way to know for sure it to use it and listen to it.

Phil O'Keefe
Now if it's low frequency THUMP you want from your "outside" mic, and that suffers little in the way of bleed from other kit elements, then I recommend you fine folks take a listen to a Yamaha Subkick... that "mic" grabs a lot of bottom, but very little in the way of mids and highs. IMO, perfect for capturing extra "beef" out in front of a kick drum when used in conjunction with a interior placed dynamic mic for attack and snap. Other than that, it's still a good MDC mic. Here are some links to threads that discuss the AT-2020... the first thread has a link to an independent (video) review of the mic : http://mojopie.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=809 http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=149918&highlight=AT-2020 http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=168350&highlight=AT-2020

Mixing a ribbon in with a 57 on guitar cabs is killer. This thread makes me want to check out the AT2020 on acoustics. Too bad it's not multi-pattern.
