Does anyone know of a good online resource about mastering compressors, hardware and software. I'm especially interested in the Fairchild 670.

Thanks.

Software bang for buck: Voxengo Elephant

http://www.voxengo.com/product/elephant/

$129.00

Also the Timeworks Mastering Comp- it's a clipper, but sounds really cool on some stuff. Really cool...

http://www.sonictimeworks.com/p_masteringcomp.php

$149.00

Also, you might like the Stillwell Event Horizon.

http://www.stillwellaudio.com/?page_id=16

$39.00

You read that right- worth every penny.

I use all 3 in various applications.

And- the Fairchild is way out of my budget!

I still don't get it. The circuts used in mastering grade hardware are nearly identical and in digital. well its numbers. the only significant difference between master and mixing or even prosumer gear might be component quality. But honestly design has a more more dramatic and quantifyable effect on sound vs component expenditure.

Tis wierd isn't it.

But in all seriousness I have heard in person an 1176 and the TDM version of it. The TDM version was sort of there, but not really.

Well I can belive that they all may offer a specific color. One may be very different from the other.

Kinda the type of bull{censored} you start to notice a while in any industry.

Lots of fluff. Little substance.

TRacks and others make software versions of the fairchild 670. I think I might have tried out a demo awhile back and found it pretty spongey for any mastering work I'd do. I prefer to use a multiband compressor or clean limiters that dont color the sound or suck all the dynamics out of the music.
