Back to the basics... Got a new PC

I think your problems are mostly due to getting everything to work as rock solid as stuff was when it was only PPC chips. I think the cross over to intel has had it's ups and downs but for the most part I am happy with the intel move at this point.

I have a Macbook 2Gig black and a original 1.6G Mini and am really satisfied with the performance.

Guitars sound better with liberal applications of various stickers and sharpie doodles.
:thu:

Unless it's a Sendero Luminoso or a National Socialist ("Nazi") sticker... but I guess that's just my compulsive middle-of-the-roader mentality. Still, ya stick to the middle of the road, you don't drive into the ditch nearly as often.

Well Guss, at least your battery did not go up in flames during the presentation.
:)

I've been pretty happy with my HP core duo with 2 Gig memory. It does get warm and the laptop tends to overhead my lap top when I sit in a recliner and make music. One bad design of this laptop computer is a vent in the bottom that gets blocked when sitting on your lap. After searching for a week to find a decent laptop board to go between the laptop and my lap, I opted for a teflon cutting board from my kitchen. The size is just right, the edges are smooth so that it does not cut into my legs, and it is warped just a bit so there is more air space under the computer. Oh, and it was cheap.
:D

A bizarre design feature (fan intake or outflow on the bottom of a laptop), to be sure.

And it IS possible to block a small vent on my Dell laptop if you spread your knees out wide --the outflow is at the outside rear side edge on my 15.4" -- it's easy to keep from blocking it -- but you have to be aware of it.

But it's basically a very cool running box (possibly because it's a single core Centrino). I don't think I've ever had the fan kick into high when it was on my lap.

Disclaimer: I'm just some garrulous loser on a computer bulletin board.

well... I am surprised this thread came to live again.

So far, I had to reformat that sucker, since even ENTOURAGE and SKYPE were a total mess.

I'm only using it for the clinics and ... I'm installing only the very basic stuff and it seems to be sort of good. Pro Tools runs OK. Live 6 runs ok.

Still, it is not possible to switch devices / applications without having to re-start to make sure it will work.

Still, it is the first laptop you can not use on your lap -unless you do not want to have more children-, the video out screws the image on the computer's screen and the USB ports do not send enough power to the devices; having to use a powered hub kills the entire concept of portability.

Any of that did NOT happen with the 1.67 GHz G4. I miss that machine.

.... People knows that I am very cold-blooded....

:D ---> are you in Greenland now?

To use ASIO at lowest latencies under Windows the 'system performance' has to be optimized for background tasks. Go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance Options. Change the default 'Applications' to 'Background tasks'. The lowest usable latency will drop to around 3 ms or below

Nope

But as a clinician you are not free of having things going wrong, specially when you're demoing the newest interface / program.

And several friends have told me "how the heck you just keep talking, tell a joke and keep people entertained while you are rebooting a machine after an unexpected crash?"

... well, that is showbusiness :D

However when it happens clinic after clinic and more than once, it sucks.
