Members seraphim7s
I love these amps - but holy crap the Fender '57 custom reissue is very pricey. So I need something with a single decent sized (10"-12") driver, ALL tube (including rectifier), and preferably based on the tweed model, with period correct appointments (or as correct as they can be). The wattage should be low - something like 10-20 watts, as this will be played and recorded in a flat. Don't wanna piss off the neighbours. Members Axe_34
Trinity amps - http://www.trinityamps.com/Product_Trindel.htm I built Stephen's Bluesbreaker clone. His work is top-notch and his customer support second to none. His Deluxe kit is my next build. Marsh amps - http://www.marshamps.com/index.php Mission amps - http://www.missionamps.com/5E3kit.shtml Ceriatone - http://www.ceriatone.com/productSubPages/AC5E3/AC5E3.htm And since you said the Deluxe RI is too pricey, I guess these are out of the ballpark (for me too) but, damn, they are nice. http://www.victoriaamp.com/visitor/show_model/
Members roygbiv
If you would consider a head and a small speaker enclosure, Frenzel makes some interesting Deluxe type products:http://www.frenzeltubeamps.com/index.html

Members seraphim7s
Woah! Those Mission & Marsh 5E3 kits look AMAZING. And that would be fun (and such an education) to build. Anyone tried them out? I wonder if they make kits for, say, a Marshall Super Bass head or a HiWatt DR103 for my bass?
Members Help!I'maRock!
i got an Allen Encore. because of the Raw knob, it falls squarely between tweed and blackface. mine is the higher power version, with 2 6L6's and a 40watt transformer, but you can get it with 6v6's or a regular 35 watt transformer. its expensive, but i think i've got every possible sound covered with this amp except for teh brootalz. just need a pedal for that. Ain't any way in hell a 5E3 won't piss off the neighbors in an apartment situation. Hell, a 5-watt champ can. Expect to attenuate. Clark Amps has offered one of the best 5E3 clones (Beaufort) for well over a decade, and are currently priced well below the '57 RI or Victoria. His Beaufort Special currently runs US$900 (the Special uses some top-of-the-line aftermarket parts like a Mojo cab, the regular Beaufort uses almost all proprietary parts made by or for Clark). And the Mission kits are great, especially if you upgrade to the Mercury Magnetics transformers.

Members seraphim7s
Crap. I may well have to go down the Princeton or Champ route then. Not that that's a bad thing of course. I love simple controls. Even a strat upsets me with its extravagant three pickups. I wonder what the Marsh champ is like? Also, Fender just this year brought out the Champion 600 reissue. I wonder what that's like? I know it doesn't have a tube rectifier like the original, but otherwise it's pretty similar. And bloody cheap. I could get one for not much more than

Members Wyatt
Crap. The problem is Tweed's lack a Master Volume, so there is little you can do to dial in a compromise for home playing. However, an attenuator along with that 5E3 would allow that "practice at home" compromise. A stock 5E3 reaches full RMS output (full clean volume) at 3 on a dial that goes to 12 (the rest is shades of distortion, from Howling Wolf through full-on Neil Young). There are plenty of mods to tweak this, but that's the original nature of the beast.
Members guitarcapo
I have a 5E3 tweed circuit head that I built. I really liked it a LOT better after installing the Mission Amps volume/tone mod. It made the headroom go up. It made the second input channel actually useful....Basically gave the amp a clean tone more like a blackface Deluxe Reverb ..but with a bit more mid hump. I highly recommend it. Members rinkrat6821
does that mission volume mod. mess with the overall tone of the amp though? and does it mess with the signature grit and bite of the amp?
