Members rw34
Well, I currently have a '72 RI Telecaster Deluxe, which while great for clean, boomy rhythm parts, just doesnt seem to be cut out for lead or overdrive/distortion. Im interested in getting a semi-hollow body as I'm looking for kind of an oasis-style overdrive for rhythm parts(guitarist usually plays a 335) and a more powerful/agressive lead tone, since i've got the tele for the cooler, calmer stuff. . Obviously if I had the funds I'd take a look at a 335 or 339, but the Hagstrom Viking seems to be the best for my price range. Unfortunately, the nearest Hagstrom dealer is a good 120 miles round trip. So really the only option is to order it sight unseen/unplayed from musicians friend or ebay. Any opinions on this guitar? Epiphone Sheraton II is another option as well..
Members Notes_Norton
I tried a Viking in a local music store. I liked it and think it compared favorably with a Gibson 335. I couldn't run through all the sounds, as the music store was very noisy that day, but it had a decent tone. The neck was very nice, the action was good, but it was a bit heavier than I expected. I guess about 8 or 9 pounds.I didn't buy it, because I found a used Epiphone Casino that I just immediately fell in love with. Note: I already had a Gibson ES-330 that has become a collectors item, so the Casino suited me for stage work just fine. I play sax, wind synth, flute, guitar, percussion controller and sometimes keyboard on the gig, switching instruments in a hurry, so bringing the Classic 330 was out of the question. The Casino is not a semi-hollow body but a full hollow body, so it doesn't fit your requirements.Insights and incites by Notes(BTW, this is my first post here. Members Wulver
A modded Epiphone Dot Studio would probably work just fine. put in whatever pickups you need, add in a Bigsby, replace the electronics, maybe the tuners. All you really need.
Members Mudder1310
I recently shopped for a nice semi that wouldn't break the bank, and there's actually a good chunk of them available.
