tri-axis - any fans?

i've been using one for many many years

i think they're fab and the range of tones is huge

you won't get a marshall sound out of it though, so you better love boogie tones!

everything from super sparkly clean, to mild crunch to skull crushing nuttiness

you have to marry it up with a good poweramp though. i've played mine through a 2:90 (6L6's) and a 20/20 (EL84's) and it sounds amazing through both

takes a while to get to know it and really dial in your tones, but i'm still finding great stuff in there even after 10 years or more

I have one and I really like it. As stated, it needs a good tube power amp to go with it. It does take a while to dial in, but settings can be found on the web. Some things to note:

1. Almost always keep the bass setting lower than the mid and treble. There is a ton of bass (which = flubbiness) in this thing - the eq's work very similar to the Mark series.

2. They have a lot of saturation, but not the over the top distortion of the dual recs. Even with the dual rec channel (I have the V2 with the dual rec mod), it doesn't have the 3D space that the dual rec has. It's more buzzy sounding, most people don't use that channel (channel 1, red).

3. Channel 2 is where you will live and if you like Mark tones, this is your dream sound. Green is my personal fav, but there is very little difference between yellow and green. Yellow is Petrucci's setting from the I&W tour. Green has a hint more clarity. The speakers and volume that he was playing could be why he chose yellow. Red is good for more death metal rhythms as it has the most crunchy (buzz) tone of the three modes.

4. It's loud, really, really loud.

Have fun and try it for a month, it does take a while to find a sound that you really like. It isn't plug and play.

I own a Hughes and Kettner Access, and recently got to try the Tri-Axis.

It was in an acquaintance's rig, dialed in and everything... I very much preferred the Hughes and Kettner.

That may have just been the way he dialed it in though.

I've got one being delivered on Thursday to complete my rack rig that started with a Mesa 2:90 and a Digitech GSP 1101. I can't freaking wait as it is replacing a Line 6 rig which I am starting to loath more and more each day I play through it.

The other guitar player in my band has a Dual Rectifier rig which the Line 6 stuff just can't stay on par with, so I decided to build my own Mesa rig to compliment his. Will be different enough sound wise from his Dual Rec but combined with the effects processor still give me all the effects and channel switching options that I actually liked from my Line 6 rig, but with beautiful tones!

cool skool

let us know if you want some settings advice - it can take a while to dial in!

hmm, well I'm hoping to get it integrated in my rack and get some settings programmed in for a gig on saturday (if I get my midi pedal project completed/working by then that is, otherwise I'm stuck with the line 6 rig for 1 more show . That also assumes that the tubes aren't shot as it is an ebay purchase where there was no mention of types/how old the tubes were.)

Do you have any suggestions for settings for a chimey clean sound (I'll add a bit of chorus to it) and a heavy rhythm sound that could hang with a Dual Rec? Not quite full blown metal sounding, but close enough?

my standard clean sound is

RHY Green - 6 5 3 4 0 0 4.5 6 0

i have a couple of chunky rhythm sounds...

LD2 Red - 6.5 5.5 4.5 5.5 0 5.5 4 4 2 (a bit marshall-y)

LD1 Red - 6.5 5.5 5 5.5 5.5 0 5.5 4.5 2 (more rectifier)

bear in mind that i use a 20/20 poweramp, which is heaving at the volume play at, so is adding a lot of compression and it's own tonal characteristics. you may have to up the gain on these slightly for your 2:90

the 2:90 is an amazing amp and the extra options of half, deep and modern really let you sculpt your tone. i found (and everyone i talked to agreed) that switching modes can make a bit of a loud "thump", so i guess pick what you like and stick with it. keep the presence controls on about half to start with - too much and it can sound really brittle.

good luck!

Thanks simeon, I'll give these a try when the triaxis gets here tomorrow. Are any of the factory settings any good or worth a listen?

Running my current line 6 gear through the 2:90 I'm not really hearing much of a difference when I turn on Deep and/or Modern so I'm guessing that maybe these will react more when it's a triaxis running through it instead.

Still don't know if I'll be even able to use the new rig at my upcoming gig this weekend as I'm having several difficulties doing the final circuits on my DIY midi foot controller, but that is a story for the DIY threads! I do a modest amount of switching, mostly between a rhythm and a clean sound, and occasionally a lead sound or a specialised setting, so I kinda need switching capabilities for the rig to be useful to me. Going from breadboards to soldered circuits is a real PITA!

this is a very, very tricky preamp

i used one in the studio, and pretty much went for the "all knobs (erm, dials) on 5, dynamic voice on 6" and i liked the result. so i went and got one for myself to build a rig around it.

i still like it quite a bit, and i LOVE the fact that you can have 128 channels, but it wrecked havoc on my perception on how things should sound. you can tweak and dial it for ages, getting "into the ballpark", but you're never really there. to me, triaxis is a very dry, refined and hi-fi sounding amp (i run mine with mesa 2:50 and marshall cabs)

when it's not driving you mad, it's so much fun.

thanks for all the tips, still not sure if i want one yet ($$ issue until i sell a bunch of crap). any other midi units out there worth checking out? not looking at the axe-fx yet, (BIG $$), but i heard it's fantastic. anything more realistically priced that sounds pretty good? just looking for preamp, got the effects aspect covered...

Prophesy, Voodu Valve, MP-1, JMP.

I own a Voodu and an MP-1, like them both very much for my needs.

Voodu is in my rack right now, and it's a tweak monster. Theres alot of stuff to be found in it. The EQ possibilites are endless.

The controller options is why I got it. It's easy to get it to do what you want.

I use it with a FCB1010 with the Uno chip installed and it works smoothly.

Any body for a power amp and maybe a MP-1?

if you use distortion mainly, i guess you'll be pretty much well off with a JMP1

it's not that expensive and a lot of people seem to like it more than a Triaxis for rhythms.

Clean channels of the JMP1 are not as good as Triaxis', but they're okay and even nice, if you use fx to sweeten them a little.
