Members elamberth
I'm interetsed in opinions about small diaphragm condensor mics. I'm looking for a pair to round out my mic closet, but the budget is modest. I'm looking to use them primarily for acoustic guitar, but would use them occasionally for piano. Although I don't really record drums, I don't want to count out the possibility someday. I'm currently looking at the MXL 603's or the Sterling Audio (previously groove tubes) GT 33's. Any comments or suggestions about others in this price range would be helpful. Thanks!
Members UstadKhanAli
I don't know what that price range is, but Audio-Technica AT4041s are good for the money. I don't know how much they cost anymore, so they may be out of your budget, I'm not sure. MXL makes some good mics for the money, I've heard, but I don't know any of their stuff personally. Phil O'Keefe
Sterling Audio (previously groove tubes) GT 33's. Sterling is the brand name GC uses for the mikes they have made for them by GT. I have a pair of Groove Tubes GT33's, and I absolutely love them on acoustic guitar. I also like the AT4041's Ken mentioned, and generally prefer them on drum overheads. Members elamberth
Thanks! I'm sorry, the Sterling Audio SDC's I was lookign at were the 31's, not the 33's. I could get one 33, then add another later, and use say my cascade ribbon for stereo acoustic guitar. Or do you think getting a pair of mxl 603's now is better? Phil O'Keefe
Hmmm... what type of a sound are you usually going for? What type of acoustic are you using?

I've had a pair of 603's for a few years now and I like them for most general apps- piano, stereo acoustic guitar, percussion, even drum overheads. Not the best mics in the locker, but still... they do sound nice.
Members elamberth
I have an Alvarez acoustic. I'm looking for a full, but not boomy, sound with a smooth, "shimmery" top end. I hope that is helpful.
Members Majoria
I have a pair of AT4041's that I use for drum overheads and acoustic guitar and I'm very pleased with them.
Members Warhead
The Audio Technica AT3031 would be a huge step up from an MXL 603 / 604. We did an 11 mic SDC shootout here last night on drums and ac gtr, value and performance it's an incredible mic. The MXL 604 is much brighter, without as much depth. The AT3031 delivers depth and body, and the top end is smooth. Overall the Oktava MK-012 is still about the best amount of mic for either application in my opinion / experience. Love 'em, but they've become harder to get, more expensive, and they've always had a bit more than their share of QC issues.
