Help me with cymbals, dudes!

I've been officially re-recruited to take the position of drums in our band. our drummer left and i'm the only one that is half-way decent at the kit so now i've got some MONEY-SPENDIN' to do!!

I've already tucked away $500 for a used yamaha stage drum kit i plan to buy...and i like the sound of it.

now I need some cymbals.

I know for a fact i'm gonna have a Zildjian Z custom 16" crash; because I cracked one of my friend's, and i have to replace it so i'm just gonna take the cracked one (hey, i'm not a purist! :D)

i was thinking about 2 crashes, a splash, ride, and hi-hat.

for the splash i'm leaning towards a Paiste Alpha 8", for the other crash i'm definitely gonna get a 'K' Zildjian of some sort (i love those things!), but for the ride and hi-hat i'm not too sure about.

I wanna spread out my kit with some sabians and paistes as well as zildjians, just so i have an assortment.

I play hard grunge rock (nirvana, silverchair, smashing pumpkins) so a durable cymbal is a must. i'd like a ride with a great ping quality for mellow stuff but doesn't wash over too much when i hit it hard.

my budget for all of these cymbals is not too large... i'm still working my way up the job ladder so i'm not making a lot of money as of yet. i don't think i'd want to pay more than 70-75 (in eBay dollars) for each cymbal. I honestly don't care about keyholeing or tiny cracks (like i said i'm not a purist...i'm a guitar player ;))

I also have to ask about the zildjian scimitars....they're an older cymbal, right? i've heard their good - tell me about them plz!

so anyways any help is appreciated. thanks!

Depends on how much you can spend.

If you're on a tight budget, get whatever you can scrap together used, and call it good.

if you have some money you can use, go with QUALITY (which is nearly proportional to the amount of money spent) over quantity.

Seriously, good cymbals can make or break a kit - and in addition, the band.

oh, dude, i know.

i played a ludwig set once at a local church and the kit didn't sound bad even if it was budget, but it was loaded with Zildjian ZBT cymbals and I swear I will never EVER buy one of those...man, talk about harsh, tinny, and unmusical.

What saved it though was the one 'K' Zildjian they had up there. Whenever I dink around on the kit I always hit that one and only that one :D

how are the Sabian B8 Pro's? I'd like to maybe get one of their rides since the price is right.

From what I've played...

The best bets for your money are Meinl MCS, Sabian B8, and Wuhan.

If I were going to get your cymbal set up, I'd go for... Sabian B8 ride, Wuhan S Crashes 16/18, Sabian B8 hihats, Wuhan splash. I only have experience with a Meinl MCS 16" crash which sounds good, but nowhere near as good as my Wuhan 16".

My Wuhan crash was $40 shipped on eBay. Can't really beat that deal if you ask me... They've got a 3 pack, 16"/18" crashes and an 18" china for $120 on Musicians Friend which I have been contemplating getting just for the 18" crash and selling the other cymbals.

Anyway, just my experience.

Yo MParsons if you decide to do that, I'll buy your 18" china.

You have just described the Schimitars! They were Zildjian's entry level cymbals from the late 80's. Were like trash can lids.

A few things... If you're cracking Zild. A's then you will for sure crack some K's. K's are thinner than most A's. I think you might crack some Wuhans as well.

B8's are good, bright..not tinny but bright. If you really can, I would find some medium to heavy weight, older and used (Zildjian A or Amir Series: Medium,Rock or Ping ride in about a 20" size) (Sabian AA series: Dry, med, or classic ride) and the same for crashes with one being 16" and another being 18's

Some decent used cymbals that would fit what you really from what you decribed might be $500 just for used cymbals. (You won't find old Ks close to that unless they're tore up)

Sounds like maybe starting out you'll have to do what Jenksdrummer says:"Get whatever you can scrap together and call it good" Maybe after playing that for awhile, you'll know more of what you really want anyhow, hope this helps

Well, you mentioned the Sabian B8 pro ride.

My band practices at our keyboardist's house, and his brother plays the drums, so, conveniently, I don't have to haul over anything except my @$$ and a pair of sticks.

He has a B8 pro ride, and I'm not crazy about it (maybe because I am used to my AA Medium Ride). It produces a VERY defined "ping" and no wash whatsoever. Also, it has no crash-ability at all. I have tried smacking it like a crash and it just goes "CLANG." The bell is pretty darn small and bright and cutting.

However, if your into rides with not much wash and a very defined "ping," then go for it.
