I picked up a Slingerland snare drum tonight...broke heads but dated Sept.1958....Mahogany shell with maple support rings... any help any of you can give me with this drum would be much appreciated....value?...may be a refinn? I don't know but I think so...it is a pale yellow now and if it is a refinn it was done a long time ago. Size is an odd one...15x8 a big snare drum...I bet it sounds killer if I can find 15" snare and batter heads for it. I will try to put up some pic's tomorrow. Are any of you Slingerland Fans out there? Please help, Thanks,Mickey66 "Edit" Remo still makes 15" heads for this drum....lucked out there. Here is a pic...click to make bigger.... t_Mar072008VIm_8d6d096.jpg

Photo is up....anybody? I have found some info...looks like this may be a Slingerland Concert King 15x8" Snare Drum. The Drum probably orig.had a wrap. Hoops are chrome over Brass which would explain why it is so heavy. Just what I need more added weight.

Well, this has come at a time when I don't need to spend money BUT this old drum needs a face-lift soooo I'm off to Jammin Sam's Website to find a wrap that will do the old "Concert King" proud. I would ask for idea's here but I'm not getting any response from Slingerland "aficionados" on this forum and not being one myself I'm kinda groping in the dark..."aficionados"....maybe there are none here? I find this a surprise:eek:

I was going to say it's probably an old concert or even marching snare at that size. The best way to tell if it's been refinished is to look at the badge grommet. If that looks FUBAR, it's been refinished. If not, it's probably original. Sorry I can' be more definite.

If you haven't done a wrap before, I'd stay away from it. This looks like a nice snare and it would be a waste to experiment with wrapping on it. I refinished a 50's Slingerland with a similar white paint finish a few years ago. I stripped the paint and then stained it a walnut color. It turned out beautiful, but I butchered the badge grommet. Cost me about $20 for everything. I'll see if I can post some pictures later.

You could browse around Not So Modern Drummer for some help on it too.

Mickey, I'll bet there are folks on
Tightheads
who could tell you about the drum.

Thanks! I will check them out...I am finding some stuff like this 1959 finish chart..... t_59slingerlam_42528b6.jpg I need to pick one of these finishes to restore this old drum...any help would be welcome.

:thu: Just click on the photo to make it bigger...I hope?

madt0wn...if you still have your Badge you can get the grommet and the tool to put it on from Jammin Sam...just google Jammin Sam...both items don't cost much and the Badge is a big part of the Kit. The grommet is FUBAR and I didn't notice it before your post....Damn!! So it is a refinn and not a real good one either...I think they glued the Badge on to the outside of the shell...Idiots....hard to tell what they used and I have to figure out a way to get it off without messin up the shell....now I really need some advice...putting the wrap on is the easy part for me...what will remove a glued(I think)on Badge...I see no seam:confused:

Thanks for the heads up on Jammin Sam, I'll look into that.

As far as your badge, I'd try a hair dryer to heat it up and see if you can get it a little soft and carefully peel it back. I'm not sure what else you could do.

I'm by no means an Slingerland "aficianado" - but I am a fan - and slowly putting together a collection.

Looks like a great (ought to be a CANNON with those dimensions), but sorry to hear that it's already been FUBARed.

Keep posting those pics - looking forward to watching your progress! :thu:

I have a mid-'70's Slingerland set in what I think is Champagne Satin finish. It's not bad looking, just somewhat bland.

The snare that came with it was some chrome-shelled thing that I didn't care for and got rid of once I found the Leedy Broadway snare that I use now.

Truer words were never spoken.

The guy I bought it from said he would bet that it was that finish on the drum orig. and I have to agree only because that finish was the most common finish you would see in music stores BUT if you look on the color chart Slingerland put out a-lot of Pearls and sparkle finishes in 1959. My first problem is getting the Badge off(glued on:freak:)without messing up the shell or screwing up the Badge...won't be easy,I tried today and had to give up:mad:if I can remove it the rest will be a piece of cake.

That snare most closely matches a 1958 "Concert king" snare. That line became the "Haskell Harr" model in 1960.

Sizes available: 8x15, 6.5x15 6.5x14 in Mahogany, Lacquer or Pearl.

Thanks Sytubs...it is a "Concert King" if I can get the Badge off the shell I'm going to do the re-wrap...I'm thinking either a Sparkle or Pearl finish at this point. If there is no way to remove the Badge I will leave it alone...I bet this drum will sound great with some new heads.

Update....Carmine sent me an e-mail with a tip on removing a glued on Badge...when they removed the wrap they messed up the grommet so they glued the Badge onto the shell...it was on there! Carmine said try WD-40 soooo I sprayed it on the Badge and let it sit for about 5 mins....this worked,I stuck my pocket knife...the tip...under the edge and it poped right off. Now, I will buy the wrap and I should have it finished soon....I will post pic's when it's done.

I've got an old Slingerland snare that I really love. The only problem has been finding a head that fits on without forcing it down. After much trial and error, I've found that Attack are the only heads that are wide enough in diameter to fit. Even the Aquarian American Classic was too small. Old Slingerland snare drums rule if they are round. My other Slingerland Radio King snare drum shell is about 1/8" out of round and is just totally useless.

I used to be the head of Slingerland when it was at Gibson, but that doesn't make me an expert.

I will say that it looks like your assessment of the drum is correct with regards to the model.

I also believe the finish to be original. Truthfully, you have to love the drum and do what you feel you have to do to it, but regarding the value, ... it is worth more if you leave it alone. It also has a vintage "cool" to it if you know what I mean.

It reminds me of a session I saw this weekend with Allison Krauss and Robert Plant. The guy was using what looked to be a set of Slingerland Rolling Bomber drums from the late 30's early 40's.

It was too cool.

I'm no Slingerland expert, but I do have a Slingerland wood snare drum I've had for 36 years! It was the first drum I ever got. My parents gave it to me for Christmas in 1972 4 months after I started out with sticks and practice pad. It has a white marine pearl finish. It sounds great. It's still my main snare to this day. I've gotten tons of compliments on it's sound. It has die cast hoops like yours. I think they help the drum produce some of the pop it definitely has.

If I were you, I'd clean it up, put new heads on it, and play it as is. If it's the Haskell Harr model all the better. He wrote the first drum book I had and it's still in use today. I see it in music stores. Too cool.

Have fun.

It's the "Concert King" 1958-1961 was the production run...I have been finding all kinds of stuff on the drum...I'm going to put it back to the orig.finish which will be the white Pearl finish. It's 8x15 should sound great.:thu:

The heads that were on my drum were 15" Remo Ambassadors and they were OLD.... you can get them new at inter-state music online....good to know about the attack heads.:thu:
