As concept art, it's awesome. As a lifestyle, it's a bit of
:facepalm:
I've seen some of these guys spend hundreds and hundreds of hours to transform a computer into . . . a computer with levers, steam valves, and old typewriter keys on the keyboard.

Hilarious.

 

The awesomeness of the creations are tempered quite a bit by the pretentiousness of the creators. And the ridiculous costumes.

 

But the steam-engine powered iron tree that was at the Crucible last year in west Oakland was pretty damn cool.

The Crucible is a non-profit in Oakland that teaches crazy {censored} with fire.

They have an impressive exhibit every year called the Fire Arts Festival that has all kinds of nutty demos.

Like, flamethrower shooting galleries, two dudes in flameproof suits making a tornado of fire, and a giant block of ice being melted away by a flame inside. Also a lot of fire dancing. Like, way, way, way too much fire dancing. In the middle was the steampunk tree.

ya know - that could be said of pretty much anything - including more than a few groups of performing musicians.
