Members Bro Blue
Tex-Mex pickups are a tad higher output than standard pickups, but not as much as Texas Specials. Mine are probably the brightest pickups on any of my guitars.
Members Strat87
I like the Tex-Mex pickups. They're pretty vintage sounding but have a bit more growl, especially overdriven.
Members redundantshrimp
from my experience with trying out different strats, id say you cant go wrong with a standard american one. and if you're into the whole david gilmour sound, put some nice EMGs in it. I specifically got mine go get a little more umph with OD (although they sound good clean, too) without getting into Texas Special territory. I am going to have to wire the tone pot to the bridge because it is very shrill as it is wired now (no load). Clean they have more chime and really good quack. Members Guitar Heel
As many have said, you're just gonna need to play a few. But, in terms of value, here are my top 3: 1. Fender Deluxe Player's (MIM) - 12" radius, noiseless pickups, lightweight and beautiful ash body. 2. Fender Deluxe Powerhouse (MIM) - has a boost similar to a Clapton and a GREAT neck. 3. Hwy 1 (2006 or later - MIA) - Nitro finish, beefy SCs, and lightweight. Buy used if you can and save a ton of cash.
Members chiro972
If your budget is limited, the squier Classic Vibe strats are amazing. I have the 50's because I wanted maple fretboard and when I played the 60's the neck felt too thin to me. The 50's was just right, not too thick, not too thin. The trem's are not the best, but they are passable. I did replace mine. I may replace the pick guard just to match the pickup covers a little better, but really the guitar plays and sounds fantastic right off the shelf. Members JetCityMatt
Strats are great guitars, but I hate their current price point. For $1200, there are better strats then Fender strats.Hey!!! I'm a happy Fender owner! And I COMPLETELY agree with you. I bought the American Mahogany Strat for $1200 and returned it the next day. They are drastically overpriced.G&Ls are the real (Leo) Fenders anywayhttp://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/GL-Legacy-Electric-Guitar-with-Tinted-Maple-Neck?sku=511302and the tribute series... bang for your buck anyone?http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Tribute-by-GL-S500-Premium?sku=511117On Ebay Australia- some tribute G&Ls for $900 AU: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/G-L-Tribute-Legacy-Electric-Guitar-NEW-in-case_W0QQitemZ270260908227QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Musical_Instruments_Instruments?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116http://cgi.ebay.com.au/G-L-Tribute-S-500-Electric-Guitar-NEW-in-case_W0QQitemZ270260910504QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Musical_Instruments_Instruments?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116
Members Johansolo
went out and checked that 60th anniversary mexican strat last night. bit of a drive but i tell you what...that strat felt awesome. loved the neck loved the fretboard, loved the sound, loved the colour (looks much better in person than in pics) but... and its a big but... there was a HUGE Crack/Chip in the paint, which was just on the top/near the arm contour...you cant see it on the front but on the top nad back it was about 5cm by 1cm. when the wife saw it she just looked at me with a "hell no you aint buying that" look. arrrrgh!!!! someone hates me. would have bought the guitar right there and then if it wasnt for that oh well...the search continues. For $1250 you are getting a $3500 Fender!
