Members Marshack
I have my strat stripped down for a hardware change and need to clean off the grime. It's black and hasn't been cleaned in 10 years! I was shocked that the Guitar shop had 20 different polishes and fret wipe, but no cleaner! I tried a cloth with hot soapy water and it didn't get the grime off, Wow! I was sure that would work. What to the techs / luthers use? Don't want a guess!!! Members Marshack
What kind of grime are we talking about that won't come off with soap and water?, Years of sweat, oily hands, just your basic nastiness. I just found that rubing it with a cloth will get it up even though the dish soap wouldn't cut it. I'm afraid this method will leave millions of micro scratches in the black finish. Members KillDozer
You might try naptha (lighter fluid) - works great for de-greasing, cleaning, etc and shouldn't harm the finish - might leave a slight haze that'll need to be polished or buffed out. Members Metalrulez
soap and water, lighter fluid or guitar polish. Baring that gasoline and a lighter might do the trick of getting rid of that pesky spot.
Members mrbrown49
Is it down in the wood grain? If it is, just leave it. I haven't met the grime yet that wouldn't come off with naptha, if the dirt is on top of the finish anyway.
Members Marshack
I used the polish, and it all came off! I just don't like the idea of the grime mixing in with the polish.

Members superflyinmonke
Goo Gone is wonderful stuff. You can get it at most general stores. I would agree that grime and polish aren't a good mix, unless you have a power-polisher to finish the job and fill in the swirl marks. I imagine there are many after that much use.
