If a $7 pack of strings is all it takes to make an $800 guitar sound as good as a $2500-$3500, then there is something wrong with this picture.
:)
Its like saying, buy the new ford focus, slap some high-end tires on it, and it will perform like a mustang!!

IF the Gibson had some 6 month old crusty tarnished 11 gauge D'addarios and the Epi had a new set of Dean Markley 9 gauge Blue steels then HELL YEA there would be a difference in play and sound!

So a $500 epiphone (with upgraded pups) with brand spankin new $7 strings can sound as good or damned close to a $2500 Gibson with VERY old, crusty, dead, $7 strings! Sorta makes me wonder why we spend all that cash

imo, gibsons, fenders, your paying a LOT for the name on that headstock...I KNEW that when I bought the 335 and it was part of the attraction...I had a beautiful, high end, top of the line guitar that should be worth something someday...that was 9 years ago and was the biggest guitar splurge I have ever done...Ive always been a fan of the affordable, working mans guitars, spend the money on high end amps...

This proves it!!!!!
Epis are Better than Gibsons!!!!

Any guitar that is bought as a modding platform then modded could sound and play very good. But what sounds good to some wont sound as good to others. Semis can and usually have their own distinct tone.

you would have to compare the 2 guitars with the same mods to come to a fair conclusion.

I believe the OP. I remember 6 years ago when I was looking for a 335 going to different guitar centers are trying them out. They always sounded like {censored}. I was getting frustrated until on eBay I saw a 1998 Gibson historic 1959 reissue 335. I had never seen a custom shop 335 so I won this guitar for I believe $1,600.

This guitar sounded incredible. It blew away all of the other 335's that I have ever played. I sold it recently because I just felt that I did not need two cherry 335's. I sold it after buying this

I got my sherraton back from the tech with new pups and electronics...
and I have had a week to bond with it and gig...I love it...no questions

And, I broke the cherry on my 335 and took it to the gig saturday night...surprisingly I wasnt paranoid went back and forth between the 335 and the sherraton.
I sold the Gibson last night and am making the exchange today. I will probably get another sherraton, and a epi casino or epi wildkat for the $$$...
The 335 is the most expensive guitar I own and compared to my guitars at 1/3 to 1/4 the price it just is NOT a good value...the hell with resale...

Now I gotta be patient and weed through the epis looking for another couple gems...leaning towards the casino!!

My epi dot is sitting in a closet, even after a pickup upgrade. I just don't like the neck on it and never really did, should have never bought it. I should put the {censored} stock pickups back in and sell it.

Did you buy it before playing it???

How did you like the neck before and then hate it afterwards?

Dont get me wrong, Ive passed up on many guitars because the feel or neck wasnt what I wanted, but I usually catch that before I buy it...and I REFUSE to buy a guitar or amp without trying it...play b4 u pay

I think I was more into just getting a hollow body at the time, and it sounded good in the store. I guess I just grew to dislike playing it..the balance when playing standing, crappy frets, all the knobs and switches are junk. It's true that when you buy one of those, you shouldn't really consider what it is untill you've changed pickups, tuners, and the electronics. So, after $200 worth of upgrades, I guess you can start looking at it fairly.

I agree...pups and electronics are crap on epiphone (most similarly priced economical guitars for that matter)...

hardware is getting better...Ive never had tuning or intonation problems

reverand makes some awesome affordable semi-hollows but you gotta buy em on line...Ive played a few and they are great out of the box...but I wont pay b4 I play

I think the stock pickups and electronics on Epiphones are great.

I get awesome tone with my DOTs and they play nice and easy with low action. They hold their tuning extremely well also.

I love the warm tone of the stock pickups. Through my Marshall JCM 800 I get about as great a tone as one could possibly get. :thu:

No problems at all on my old Korean Dot either....everything feels a lot more solid than say my Epi korina V (switches and pots...ugh!) and it sounds great.

I'm thinking I am going to leave the stock pups in my Epi LP, although one of the pots is bad so I'll rewire the whole thing soon. New pots and caps, switch, jack, and maybe try to set it up with that mod that keeps the pups from getting muddy as you turn down the volume
