Members kentuckyklira
http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?t=2500405 I have a question. I got a Hughes & Kettner Duotone in need of repair for cheap a few weeks ago. Seems that the problem was that somehow a pre-amp valve socket had got loose and dirty. That was an easy and cheap fix. So, while I admit the clean sound is as great as the reviews say it is, I
Members the_bleeding
honestly, thats just how h&k's sound. Preamp tubes wont fix as much as a speaker swap though. Do those first.
Members Cliff Fiscal
You could try some JJ preamp tubes....they're usually just a tad smoother.

Members Cliff Fiscal
Yep, but ditching that V30 is a better idea.
Members the_bleeding
Yep, but ditching that V30 is a better idea. agreed. Theyre really harsh on the high end if they arent broken in. And they wont break in unless you roar through them.

Members Cliff Fiscal
I have some really old V30s in a 4x12 cab that are broken in, they're still a bit harsh/ugly at lower volumes. I can't stand V30s until the amp is at stage volumes. (some amps sound really good with V30s)

Members kentuckyklira
they sound good with amps that dont have a harsh high end. Mesas and old marshalls. Plus the common alternative for v30's is g12t-75's, and theyre REALLY soft and fizzy in the high end, and lack the low mids that v30's have - which many people go for. OK, I have a few of those here too. Tomorrow
Members kentuckyklira
Thanx guys. Sounds excellent with the EVM 12L speaker. Saved me a lot of time and money I would have spent checking out different tubes! And no thanx to the MAPs forum!
