Why did singers use 2 microphones taped together in the 70s?

Was it in case one died? or having 2 microphones a little apart create a delay on the vox?

you have to get past the intro (about 3 or 4 minutes, Rory does talk about the lovely sunburst on his strat if you have the time to sit through it.)

Often it was to cancel noise. The singer would sing into one, and the other would pick up the room sound/noise, which would be subtracted from the mic the singer was singing into.

 

really? thru phasing issues? i cant visualize this approach very well.. could you explain it for me pls?:confused:

The reason for two mics back then was, they didn't have splitter-snakes to send the signal to both the house PA and a recording console/deck. One went to the house, the other to the recording rig.
