For sale is my Schecter Damien Special. Crimson red quilted maple top on a mahogany back, hardtail (TOM), maple neck, rosewood fretboard, 24 frets Bridge and neck pickups are Seymour Duncan hybrids, made from a pair of Screamin Demon and Pearly Gates. The bridge position uses the SD screw and PG slug coils / The neck pickup uses the SD hex coil and the PG screw coil. The SD/PGb hybrid in the neck position balances very nicely given that this is a 24 fretter. Guitar is in near perfect condition with only a few swirl marks. It has never left the house. Asking $400 shipped / pp. No trades, please. I will consider all reasonable offers

If your yardstick is notes/second or some other specific technical measure, then you'd likely say "no". But I guess I romanticize what it means to be a rock star. that means that your notariety isn't limited to musicians. If you look at fame as a factor, there is no one as famous that is that good. There is also no one that good who is that famous. Eddie reached far more people than other guys who might be technically faster or who play more complicated music. But he built songs that got him out there and everyone knows who he is. Yngwie is a helluva player, and he is quite a character. But he is obscure. There are plenty of guys: via satch etc who are really good, but no one but musicians know who they are. No one but musicians were reached by their music. If you rock in your basement, you are not the greatest hard rock guitarist. Eddie stood on top of the world and tore that {censored} up and made a name for himself. that makes him tops in my book. +1 great post. By that measure and without taking too much time to think about it, the only person since Eddie to approach this magnitude is Slash. And he approaches it; he does not reach it.

Irrelevant. What was going on around of them has no influence on their abilities to be interesting, or to lose focus. Really? when I was growing up in the 70s we had 3 TV stations: CBS, NBC and ABC, (ok, 4 with PBS if you were a nerd or Sesame Street fan). Each one got "about" 1/3 of the viewership. Now there are a bazillion stations. It has nothing to do with holding interest, it has to do with an audience having other viable options available. In terms of musical interest around 1970, you would look for your inspiration from Clapton, Beck, Hendrix, Page, Keef, Townshend, and a *handful* of others (please don't shoot me if I left 3 or 4 off the list) ** ** EDIT: I was only referrring to 60s influences obviously there was the whole 1950s birth of rock and roll (Chuck, Buddy Holly, and so on) By the late 70s hundreds and hundreds of bands came and went, some stayed on the scene. This was when Eddie had only arrived along with countless other 2nd / 3rd generation influences after the 60s wave

This makes perfect sense considering Eddie always said he was one of his main influences. Clapton was interesting for a longer period of time though. Almost a decade even. EVH gets 77- to about 1982. Clapton wins that one. That is not fair at aface value. You've got to consider their eras. When Clapton was at his peak there were a fraction of the number of mainstream bands then there were at VHs peak. And in the late 60s the whole guitar god thing was brand new. There were a few dozen guitar heros (sorry) by the time Ed came along and the novelty of a guitar virtuoso was not a new concept

One premise I think that has not been established... What does "Influenced by" mean? It could mean a) I decided to play guitar after I heard Hendrix | EVH | Clapton |Cobain | whoever b) Songwriting style c) Technique d) genre e) Choice of equipment any or all of the above in any combination

I can only think of 2 other players with the type of impact Eddie has had: Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. And it just so happens that Eddie cites them as his two biggest influences

Also, if an entire generation of "soulless" shredders arose because of Eddie, then that's not his problem because Eddie was not soulless. Eddie himself was a great player, could play a {censored}ing mean rhythm guitar, and his solos can be wanky (Eruption anyone) but when it came to laying down a solo for a song, it was usually very tasteful, full of dynamics and tension, all the good things that a lead guitarist should do. He just did it with more advanced technique than most, that's all. EVH has great tone and feel. Just listen to the "Beat It" solo. It's just a beautiful solo. It's full of tension, feel, gets that little bit of fireworks in there but there's always great movement and it's not a widdly widdly woooooo solo, it really builds up to that big huge ending. It's a lot better than Slash playing the same scale yet again in all his solos. his intros are "You had me at hello". Women in Love is one of his most melodic or the power of the pedal notes in the intro of Unchained

No doubt that he has had a huge influence on rock music and electric guitar playing in general.... as much as anyone I would think, including Hendrix, Clapton, SRV... you name them... I do believe though that his success, particularly his commercial success as a "rock star" and his overall influence, has more to do with his ability to write catchy songs that appeal to the masses than his guitar prowess. Without that "pop song" element, he would probably be just another guitar virtuoso with a cult following of people who post on guitar forums. ...not that there is anything wrong with that. perfectly valid statement and IMO why most virtuosos do not get the mass appeal. I would bet the majority of the population of the US over 14 years old could not name 1 satriani song and 1 vai song
