Members Karma1
A friend of mine has a Super Champ XD, as do I, and he's been having some problems with his, especially at higher volume after it's been in use for a while. It will be playing fine, then all of a sudden develop a loud buzz, that continues even after uplugging the guitar cable. He brought it over yesterday to check out and we noticed a couple things. First the socket where the AC cord plugs in is a bit loose. Also the power tubes were black, compared to mine which were clear. Does that mean they are blown, or are they just different tubes. I'm not that knowlegeable about tubes, but have never seen any like that. I've only changed tubes for tone or performance not because they were faulty. Anybody have any advice about this? Members Meowy
If you have some extra tubes lying around, give them a try - or if you are willing to give yours a quick try in his amp.
Members Mid Life Crisis
Sounds like the tubes. They shouldn't be black - think incandescent light bulbs. I have had an SCXD for a year and experienced some weird farting noises a few months after getting it, which turned out to be the tubes. It's fine now, after I took it back and Fender replaced them. Members Bro Blue
It could be the tubes. Try a tube swap and see what happens.
Members Oldskool Texas
On mine the transformer was wonky - it emitted a nonstop high-pitched whine the fourth day I had it. So long, SCXD. Hello, Blackheart.
Members hecticone
The tubes that came in my xd are black also. Just a coating.
Members neffrocks
The black tubes you are talking about are normal (most likely). Try replacing them and see what happens. I work in a music store and sorry to say, we've had nothing but problems with those amps. Lots of circut boards and such. Much to go wrong. They are cheaply made. Sorry. Im not bashing, just my experience.
Members Bro Blue
Is the black a coating or does it look like soot? I thought the OP meant the latter. Sometimes the inside of the tubes are coated and they look gray, too.
Members steve_man
Had some of the same issues with mine....ended up returning it...
Members metal0822
sounds like bad preamp tube to me. put your preamp tubes in his and see if it stops. no biasing or anything when dealing with preamp tubes too. ive had a couple amps do this and it was the problem, i believe its called microphonic preamp tubes (or maybe thats something else )
Members blind radish
if you bought it new, send it back to fender via a licensed dealer ... fender will send you a brand new one ... no questions asked mine had the same thing ... It happened to me when I unplugged the foot switch while it was on
