I have a few guitars listed on Craigslist at the moment. Craigslist here is a wasteland, the only thing I've ever sold is a couch, all my musical instrument stuff ever gets is spam. I got this this morning.

** CRAIGSLIST ADVISORY --- AVOID SCAMS BY DEALING LOCALLY

** Avoid: wiring money, cross-border deals, work-at-home

** Beware: cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping

** More Info: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html

Dao u allow direct bank transfers?

My response. I briefly felt bad, just in case it was a genuine buyer, but... would ever do bank transfers for a guitar? I used to respond with horse porn in attachments, but that required I look at horse porn to send to them.

I also noticed that, if he were a scammer, he wasn't even smart enough to copy and paste, because while most are exactly the same as the listing, which is a good indication of a scammer, this guy copied it exactly without the capitalization.

{censored} yourself.

They promptly responded back!

I hate this kind of {censored} with a passion. My old man was hit hard when the economy took a turn about 2 years ago, he ended up losing his ass on his house, most of his company and is still working his ass off to get back in the black when he should have been scaling down for retirement. But I remember him calling one night almost in tears because he was so happy. He had apparently won $75,000 from Publisher's Clearing House. From what I could figure out his fiancee had entered them online and he received a notification along with an advance check for $2000 that was to be used towards the transfer of funds.

You have no idea how hard it was to explain to him how he was being scammed and that the check was stolen (because they do use real checks). The scam basically gets the victim to cash the check, transfer the funds and when the actual company who that check came from disputes the charges it is taken from the victim's account. I believe that there was something in there that would have enabled them to get basically all of his personal information as well.

I just had him read me a line from the letter verbatim and I entered it into google; about 20 links popped up siting this as a known scam.

I don't know which is worse; the stealing or the false hopes they provide. I don't know if $2000 would have done anything to the situation he was in one way or the other, but it was a psychological mind{censored}.
