When did Gibson start using laminate rosewood fingerboards?

Given how thin a typical Fender rosewood board is, I can't see why folks are so bent outta shape.

 

 

Because Gibson spent millions of marketing dollars convincing people to think big solid rosewood fretboards are the mark of greatness.

I remember seeing that thread, but for some reason I'm surprised all over again. It's like the "ADD compared to a goldfish in the bowl" joke. The fish swims around and says to itself, "hey look, there's a castle" swims around and says, "hey look, there's a castle", swims around and says, . . . .
