Howdy all,

My wife and I went to see the doc the other day. mostly just for her med refills and to ask about my insomina and how to get ready for better term life insurance policies.

Well, she (yes she and not too shabby looking) ran an EKG (heart) and it checked out fine. But said we both needed to exercise more and eat decent, (my wife has been losing a few pounds and I've been gaining lately) I told her that I play drums and she said that's really NOT enough exercise. Anyway, just want to mention that so it may take more than drumset playing to get exercise..........

I am going to disagree a little with your wife...sorry...I'm like that. It's not the fact that you play drums...it's HOW you play drums. That's all the exercise I did for over 20 years and I weighed 155 for most of my adult life. I quit smoking and gained weight, but when I quit playing, I gained a ton of weight! Now I'm fat, bald and ugly...two items are out of my control, but that's another story...

If you play, and I mean really play, it's one of the best cardio exercises you can get...and you are using virutally ALL the muscles in your body at one time....even the smiling and grunting. But you gotta really play...not just practice exercises...I mean REALLY PUMPING! I used to loose vitrually a couple of pounds a night. Sure the hot lights helped, but when I thrashed it out, you could literally feel the weight come off. When I joined the foo foo Admirals and played in a tux/suit every night, I could feel the weight start to accumulate. I did not work very hard with them...

If you can really kick it say an hour a day, IMO you'd be fine in the exercise dept. You'd be working your limbs, your heart, your mid section, and above all, your psyche. But you REALLY gotta work it out to make it work for you...:thu:

And just for the record, I just had a stress test 2 weeks ago and reached over 105% of my target heart rate (and I could have gone further, but I think my legs would have fallen right off the treadmill) In the words of Mick Jagger "it is a drag getting old"...

+1- Carmine and Box have my vote. I think it's the intensity of the playing. Yea, I go to the gym, but I've done that off and on for years. But this year since Christmas I've lost 13#'s. I can only attribute the little extra to the drums. When you get freakin' old like me, it don't come off as easily as when I was 30. And it's not much muscle loss, if any at all. I'm eating right, plenty of protein and good carbs and my strengths coming back.

PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC WHITE BOY!AND SHED THOSE UNWANTED POUNDS, LOSE THOSE LOVE HANDLES, AND PREFORM LIKE A PORN STAR IN BED. YOUR WIFE WILL LOVE YOU EVEN MORE:thu::thu:

**clarification**

(1)-I will wholeheartily AGREE that playing a hot ass show under the lights with set up and tear downs burns major calories. But, I have not played an outside gig in a long while. I most practice 45-60mins and then play along to CDs another hour or two about three days a week.

(2) The female doctor who is not my wife told me that it wasn't a lot of excercise after I told her that I play drums mostly as a hobby nowdays.

(3) It may very well be that my doc doesn't know how in the hell to ROCK AND ROLL!!

Just to be clear, thanks for the responses guys!!

I know what you're saying Carmine, what you wrote reminded me of when I was in high school and I would put the headphones on and rock along to Journey, Rush, Genesis, Kansas Live albums and be sweating like a pig (part because it was upstairs room and hard to keep cool) It was like oil for my joints and encouraged me to play on!

if you exercise and stretch it actually makes drumming feel a lot better. So I suggest doing both more. Also try doing some yoga, both you and your wife could do it. I do every so often with my girlfriend and it's more of a workout than I ever gave it credit for, and I actually feel really great afterwords. I've also found that having a dog helps get me out of the house and walk.

Time to get into death metal!

I can certainly see how drumming would be a very effective form of excercise, especially if you play live. As mentioned, there is all of the lifting and setting up the kit, and playing in lets say a small venue full of people generating heat, while the lights are on you and you're giving it all you got must be as good as using a sauna.

It's probably because I'm new to drumming, but I first practicing steady double bass kicks I would get kind of sore in the legs. The other day I was doing some recording, and I did upbeat drumming for four minutes, then off for four minutes if I thought it was a decent enough take and the entire thing probably lasted for roughly three hours, by the end of that I could feel a slight burn in some of my muscles.
