Members TamaDrummer0
I use 2.3mm hoops on my snare and my toms, but I've heard diecast are easier to tune, but they dampen a bit. Some people like to use diecast on their snare and 2.3mm on thier toms, am I right? Tell me your opinions.
Members mikestix78
I like the sidestick sound of a diecast hoop, it's a lot stronger to me. I know bob gatzen did a video comparison of two identical snares, one with 2.3mm the other with die cast. Go look for it on youtube. Might be worth checking out. He talks about the feel being different. I know on most tama drums, they use die cast hoops.
Members drumtechdad
They sound different. 2.3 is more open/lively/resonant, die cast is more focused, less wood in the sound, perhaps a bit punchier. They're more popular on snare drums, probably because they dry out the sound a bit. Many drummers like what they do to toms, too. But it's a significant change, and not everyone thinks it's a change for the better. And it depends on the drums, too. Alas, it's wicked expensive to experiment, only to discover you don't like what they do to the sound.

Members Jarick
If you're drum rings too much, they help dry it out, but at the expense of sustain. I like it on the batter side of some snares that are ringy, but I've also swapped out cast for 2.3mm to add more ring too.

Members jazzdrum
no not really, I like to play everything, especially jazz, but never been in a jazz band. I really want to be in one though, but most guys just want to play rock'n roll covers. I'm OKAY with that too.
