Members Zooey
I've got a MIM Fender Jazz Bass with active electronics. The tone is pretty good, but I'm getting tired of the active pickups. Unless the battery is extremely fresh, there's a fair amount of noise in the output. I want an instrument with traditional passive pickups. My questions: 1) Is it stupid to try to turn this instrument into something it is not? In other words, should I modify the bass, or just sell it? 2) Which passive J pickups are recommended?
Members The Real MC
Bartolini or Seymour Duncan. MIM Jazz are good guitars.
Members FebruaryStars
+ 1 on the Barts They cost a bit more than the lot of aftermarket pickups but they are crystal clear and come in a variety of voicings.

Members sunburstbasser
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the MIM Fender Active Jazz is passive pickups, active preamp, is it not? If thats the case, you'd need to just get a new control plate with the controls on it. If it is active pickups, it probably also has an active preamp and you'll have to change that out too to get a passive bass. Bartolinis are good. Personally, I really like Lindy Fralin pickups. Kent Armstrongs are really good too. If you DO stick with active, just skip the pickups and drop a J-Retro in there.
