Gabriel touring with Genesis??

I heard a snippet on the radio today about Gabriel touring with Genesis. Does anyone know more about this? A reunion of the "real" Genesis would be something to see and hear. I can't imagine all of those guys on the same stage together again. I'd be happy if Mike Rutherford sat out and let Tony Levin play bass for the tour.

don't rule anything out yet.
:)

Hmmm... I could build a site with random fact that point away from it happening. ;)

I'd love to see them together and hope they do... but Peter has consistantly had a lot on his plate. I'll stick to my original opinion till I see it on www.petergabriel.com

from Peter's forum:

I think Peter has made the right decision. The thought of watching a group of 50 somethings trying to recapture the glory days of Genesis could ruin my good memories. Besides, in a BBC article Peter says he's working on some new material instead - and that sounds much more interesting (if he ever finishes it).

If the Rolling Stones, The Who, and Pink Floyd can trot themselves out there after all this time and do successful tours, why can't Genesis? I'm sad that PG & Steve won't be participating, but I'm still holding out that Steve may come on board at the last minute.

I agree that PG well realizes he's outgrown the Flower & Fox Lady costumes...I wonder how far back in time Genesis will go on their play set?

I'm going, no matter what. To miss out would be to miss out on history in the making. Since I was on the wrong side of the globe for the '82 Reunion, I'm sure as heck not missing this.

As PG said himself:

"There's no question I would not have been allowed to work along the lines I've gone if I'd stayed in the band. On the other hand, without me they've all come out of themselves a bit more."

Kamin, Philip et al (1984): "Genesis: Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and beyond."

So why make several steps back in development instead of keeping good memories of the beginning?

It will never be the same Genesis again, so the term "reforming" is quite wrong in this case. I think it would be the formation of a completely new band with the names just the same, but never the attitudes towards music.

And anyway, how do you actually cover progressive rock? (Which is what they would do)

Wouldn't you destroy the idea/the concept of 'progress' by going back? Or would it be the invention of a completely new genre, e.g. 'procoveressive'?

there's nothing random about the stated press release coming in a few weeks. -shrug-, and quoting peter gabriel from 22 years ago is hardly convincing now.

besides, even rutherford, collins and banks getting back together would be a "reunion". just hope they don't play anything off "invisible touch" -barf-

Gabriel passes on Genesis reunion

Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel sang with Genesis in the early stages of their career

Former Genesis singer Peter Gabriel says he will not be joining his bandmates for an upcoming reunion tour.

Gabriel, 56, was a founding member of the band, singing with them until 1975, when he left to pursue a solo career.

"There were conversations and I decided not to be a part of it," Gabriel told BBC News.

His replacement, former drummer Phil Collins, has confirmed he will take part in the reunion tour, which was announced earlier this week.

"I'm very happy for them," said Gabriel.

"It's not that I've ruled it out, but I've got some new material that I'll be working on."

A spokesman for Genesis said specific details of the tour and "long term plans" including possible new material would be announced in the next few weeks.

Cult success

Genesis sold over 130 million albums during the 1970s and '80s, scoring hits with albums such as Nursery Cryme, Selling England By The Pound and Invisible Touch.

They started out as a progressive rock band, but took a more commercial direction when Collins took over the vocal duties. The 1980s saw them score a run of top 40 singles, including Mama, That's All and In Too Deep.

Collins quit the group in 1996, and was replaced by former Stiltskin singer Ray Wilson.

He recorded one album, 1997's Calling All Stations, with remaining members Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks before the band was put on indefinite hiatus.
