Members xOriginalNinjax
SX P?????? After a neck, bridge, pickup, and pot replacement, as well as maybe a pickguard, you'll be good to go! and under $400-500 depending on price of pickups! Members Thumper
G&L is a good bet. SX is another option. The Ps go for @ $100-120, plus that much again for mods (bridge, pots and pups) and you have nice bass for quite a bit less than a new MIM P-bass. Why non-Fender? Any particular reason? Members REMUS
There are quite a few out there are you looking for the body shape or just the pup? And do you mind buying second hand...? OT: I really cannot understand why you are reccomending SX basses for someone wanting a bass for under $1000, even after you have replaced everything but the body and the neck with a USA item... it's still only about $700 total... SX are good for the money, but they arn't that good... or they would put the prices up.
Members Vinny D
Check Ebay for some used G&L SB-2 basses, you can usually grab a nice one for around $600. New depending on what you get they are right around $1000

Members dragon9666
Your knockin' SX but you throw out a Squire? WTF? Gimmie a SX over squire anyday! Squire has GOT to be the biggest POS out there! Plus there MADE by Fender!

You must be a raving fanboi to even compare them... again imo.
Members dragon9666
Yes, G&L are not even in the same world as SX. I'd go G&L for a P under a grand too! What else is out there? Ibby lawsuit?
Members REMUS
Don't know why he posted it, although due to a minor technicality... you could consider it to be non fender

Members Billy-B
Consider doing what I did; start collecting parts and build yer own. It was a lot of fun (both hunting parts, and then assembling it), and it turned out great--one of my fav basses. Billy-B
Members 82Daion
You might be able to find a Lakland Skyline Glaub for under 1K, but I'd go for the G&L if I was in your situation. Mike Lull and Sadowsky make some great basses in that style, but they're not exactly under 1K...
Members sunburstbasser
Bass Central has Lakland Bob Glaub Skyline models on sale for $980. Lakland's basses are very good, to me. Used, you could slash a few hundred off the price. Mike Lull makes a P bass but I don't know about price.
Members Shuma Gorath
$980? I guess they went up. I bought my Lakland Skyline Glaub for $850 from Bass Central a couple of years ago. Sold it though.

Members lownote
G&L's soapbar "P" is no longer produced . . . Skyline is "made in asia." if you don't want the best deal on a USA made instrument - "the USA made" Fender for $1k - you may as well get the "made in asia" Squire Vintage Modified P & save about $750 from the asia Lakland Skyline. the VM Squire P is a nice piece - as long as you like Oly White . . . i do . . .
